    Decking into soil

Hi everybody, I have an small area of garden (about 4m x 2.5m) which I am planning to replace with decking. I want to put the new decking in at the same level as the existing grass. The way I was planning to do this was by cutting grooves in the grass/soil and pouring pea gravel in the bottom...

    insurance advice

I would definitely contact the insurance company and see what happens. I used to do a lot of structural engineering work for insurance claims and they often paid out on claims that could have been considered poor workmanship.

Could you run your eyes over this please gentlfolk.

It looks like you have the 9 x 9 blocks poking out of the ground a bit.

    Plastering

Personally I would go back to the brickwork because if some of the plaster is loose anyway and you stick the new plasterboard to it there might be a chance of it all becoming loose in the future. I also agree with the comment about the window and doors. Also if the electrics are original, it...

    RSJ lintel calculations?

I think if you look at the BSI website, it shows BS449 Part 1, which is the relevant section, is withdrawn although a lot of engineers still use it. Alternatively you could pay someone suitably qualified to design the beam for you, which you could probably get for about fifty quid if you...

    The REG\\\'S

Part of the problem with people doing things in accordance with the building regs as they should is that a lot wouldn't like the results they ended up with. eg. joist, beam and wall sizes etc. They would probably think it was all over designed, just as many builders seem to do when they ask for...

    Plastering Course - Fred Flinstone

I have also been on the two day plastering course in Bedford and thought it was worthwhile. Another benefit of the course in Bedford is that if you have any problems afterwards you can e:mail or phone them and they will give you further advice. Obviously I cant say whether it is better than...

    Securing Loft Joists

There probably wouldn't be a problem with running the additional joists that way although just be aware that it will not make the floor any stronger and you could argue that it makes it a bit weaker because it has to carry the extra joist weight. An alternative would be to install deeper...

    Securing Loft Joists

Not really unless you were to install timber noggins between the existing joists at the strap positions also. Is there a particular reason you want to add joists above the existing ones running the other way ?

Loft conv RSJ's v Joist doubling

Steel beams are not necessarily required, but your existing ceiling joists probably wont be strong enough to span the distance between the walls carrying the increased floor load. The design loading for a floor is six times as much as a roof void with light storage. There used to be guide for...

    Cable behind skirting board

If I were to recess the sockets into the skirting board, surely that would be better than the existing face fixed ones which must stand more chance of getting knocked. Is that the only reason to avoid recessing sockets into timber skirtings or is there a risk of fire ?

    Cable behind skirting board

I suppose I could drill a small pilot hole somewhere out of the way to find out. I do know that one of the smaller upstairs skirtings has a void behind it though. I have also been advised on this website that its not a particularly good idea to recess a socket into a skirting board.

    Cable behind skirting board

Does anyone know of a clever way of installing a cable behind a skirting board for a plug socket without removing or damaging the skirting board ? The reason is that my sockets are face fixed to original 350mm high skirting boards with the wires comig up from the floor in trunking. The house...

    tiling onto hardboard

Sorry gcol, I didn't mean tile onto the hardboard, just the small area of tongue and groove boards, assuming they are well fixed down and in good nick. Although I do agree with taking the T & G up and installing noggins. Just thought might be a bit easier if there was something suitable to...

    tiling onto hardboard

I would take up all the hardboard and replace with ply otherwise any floor tiling you do will probably crack/lift and be a waste of time. You might be able to treat the existing area of floor boards with something and tile over if its not too big an area, although a professional tiler might...

    Laminate Flooring

Does anyone know of a good method/product for cleaning laminate flooring (kitchen). It would be nice if it looked a bit shiny but I dont want to make it slippy. I have mopped it using soapy water but it still looks a bit dull. Any tips would be much appreciated.

    Corgi notification of boiler installation

Im not worried about the home information report, there are bigger problems like rewiring to worry about as far as thats concerned and the rules for the home information report could turn out to be unworkable after its been going for a few years. I will also be amazed if I still have this...

    Corgi notification of boiler installation

I probably wont bother if I shouldn't have a problem with guarantee, although what would corgi say if I informed them and provided the benchmark sheet with the installers details on it which they could confirm the installation with.
