    Worktop tools

Hi Dave, Ideally a 1/2" router and straight/2 fluted blade I would have said. Strange thay they should hire a 1/4" out as part of the package ? I wouldn't have thought it'd be 'meaty' enough for the job to be honest. Trigger action quick clamps would be O.K. I reckon. In addition I'd...

    Painting a window frame

6 to 8 years plus for Dulux Weathershield, depending on the window's aspect in relation to weather conditions, and that's not just off of the back of the tin, that's in my experience. Linseed oil paints have their place in the market too, and by all accounts are great products. I'm sure mo2...

    Painting a window frame

As splinter says, treat any knots with knotting solution, and then use a good paint system like Dulux Weathershield. This would entail treating any bare timber with wood preservative, then a coat of primer (the grey stuff - aluminium oxide primer) including the rebate for the glass, then pop the...

help with adjusting weights on a sash window

Hey there Mr. Sashwizard ! Can you recommend me where to get lead weights from in South London ? I've been using www.reddiseals.co.uk of late, but would be handy to know somewhere closer to home. I'm in Greenwich SE10 by the way......and apologys for hijacking the post !

help with adjusting weights on a sash window

Hi G, You're right in that the weights need to be slightly heavier than the total weight of the sash, glass and fittings (that's where the bathroom scales come in handy !) You can make small adjustments by threading nuts or washers onto the sash cord as long as they don't affect the extent...

I suggest you look around you. Timber isn't opening and closing like the local Library - even if you think it is. joe No. Just opening generally. The upside is more work for decorators & more sales of decorators caulk to fill incorrectly jointed skirting. B&Q must be doing a roaring trade.

Joe, wood expands and contracts all the time. You can't see it. You can only see gaps in skirting incorrectly jointed after many many years of slow drying out from central heating systems. That's why you should try to keep antique furniture away from heavily centrally heated rooms. You're right...

    Skirting techniques.

In short, big-all explained it succinctly like this : "EXTERNAL MITRES CLOSE up with shrinkage as the wood shrinks towards the wall thus pulling the mitre tighter, whereas with INTERNAL MITRES both surfaces are pulling back towards the wall so it OPENS twice as much as they are moving at...

    Skirting techniques.

I dunno why I'm bothering, but.....in response to Joe Firstly, even room acclimatised wood will shrink after years and years of battering by modern central heating. The shrinkage will occur in years to come, like I said well after you've 'renovated' your property and parted with the cash...

    Skirting techniques.

Apologys Big-all.....and I hope my comments aren't counter productive....but there is a certain arrogance here that just doesn't sit well with me. If you stopped for a second Joe-90, read the thread and thought about it, it's just been explained to you technically why mitres are fine for...

    Skirting techniques.

The problem is Joe 90, that your "perfect joints" are only perfect cosmetically for a shorter time than scribed internal joints. That won't matter to you because you're "a property renovator" (n.b. not a property restorer). Your internal "perfect joints" will open up as a result of shrinkage...

    Skirting techniques.

That's not "the way everyone does it these days"...... Carpenters that do it for a living scribe internal corners and mitre external corners. I would bet a fair amouint that that's how Splinter does it too....

Where Can I Buy a Solid Oak Worktop OnLine?

Well, yes you can buy a router that will take 1/2" and 1/4" cutters. If you're thinking of buying one, there are a couple of good routing for beginners books that'll explain the various types, and what they can do, and save me a whole lotta stammering and stuttering trying to explain :lol...
