    Don't Go There

Some years ago a bought a flat with an underground garage directly below. It had underfloor electric heating and electrical devices such as automated curtains, and the garage had some large switches for a workbench. The electricity bills could be quite high but they were also very variable, some...

Screws/nails to use in damp area?

I once had a damp cellar - stored some wine in it, all the labels rotted and fell off - had to drink it to find out what sort it was.... Solved the problem by fitting an extractor fan to pull air from the cellar to outside, and setting a timeswitch so that it came on automatically for an hour a...

    Tarus T4500 Chainsaw Wont Start

To start, you need: 1. compression, 2. a spark (strong enough to work in the compressed vapour), 3. a more-or-less correct fuel/air mixture. If the plug is getting wet, there may be too much fuel. I suggest you heat up the plug to dry it out, and turn over the engine a few times (to get air in)...

Rusted Screws - how do I remove

Sometimes you can loosen them by giving them a gentle bash inwards with a light hammer and a small chisel, or similar.

    Replacing Boiler - BG Quote

Had a quick read of The Domestic Heating Compliance Guide, what a depressing document ! Surely customers would rather rely on the professional skills of qualified installers.

change heating & hot water set up

Seems strange that you would want to heat the house and not have any hot water. If it's a question of boiler size, the energy required to heat the water is usually small in relation to the house heating.

    Gas supply size help

Spooked - how right you are ! Accepting that most Corgi people do a sound professional job, what really bugs me is that other professionals (nurses, teachers etc.) have to work several hours to pay for just one hour of Corgi's time.

    Gas supply size help

If you do a search you'll find a big history of discussion on this subject. Personally I reckon that in most cases it would only make a marginal difference, bearing in mind that modulating boilers will not often be required to run at their full rating anyway.

    Thermostatic Valves

Thanks, mjmcmil, I've had a look at the useful link you gave. It's quite a complex subject ! Maybe I should just learn to live with it....

    Thermostatic Valves

I was thinking of asking a £orgi plumber to install a new boiler for me so as to meet current regulations, and I was expecting a few daft but unavoidable things like fitting a 22mm gas pipe. But I was surprised that he wants to fit three thermostatic valves on upstairs radiators, to comply with...

Toilet : intermittent problem : sometimes keeps filling up

Not sure, but maybe it needs a good cleaning. I think the mechanism can jam if it get a bit of limescale in the wrong place.

    DIY alarms

I've had Scantronic wireless bits and pieces for years, and I've been really pleased with the system. We have a couple of key-ring thingies by the bed-side, these are used to activate the system last thing at night, and could also be used to set off the alarm in an emergency.

    Gloworm Fuelsaver 100F

I get the impression that the Fuelsaver 100F has its plumbing at the bottom, with the flow at the bottom left, but the smaller boilers (like my 45F) have the plumbing at the top, with the flow at the top right. Anybody agree or disagree ?

    Gloworm Fuelsaver 100F

Yes, definitely on the left for this boiler...

    Gloworm Fuelsaver 100F

Looking at the Glow-worm site, I get the impression that models with the plumbing on the top have the flow pipe on the right, which I'm sure is the case with my old 45F.

    Gloworm Fuelsaver 100F

On my 45F the flow is the right-hand pipe.
