    HDD not working

Assuming windows: Control Panel, Administration Menu - Disk Manager. See if you can find it there. This looks at the raw disks. If it's there but has no drive letter assigned to it, the file system may be damaged/corrupt/broken beyond repair. Do NOT create a new filesystem/partition...

Dent in copper pipe going into radiator

Dents are fine. Creases might be a problem and prone to leaking, but not dents.

    Bindweed and big old tree

Yep, really is that simple. The only downside is the top stuff will die and look bad, but unlike ivy, bindweed will fall apart within a year or so.

Anything illegal about 'outing' a cowboy builder on the net?

"The truth is its own defence" Don't deviate from the facts, don't conjecture or cast any personal opinion and I find it difficult to believe you could be successfully prosecuted. If your isp pulls it, go elsewhere - or use a free site to start with, or host your own site.

    Toilet smell and drains help..

Did you do any rodding/cleaning anywhere near that area? The pushfit wastes don't take much to push them off. Sure it's not coming out of the sink, shower and bath wastes? Bung them up overnight and sniff in the morning. As long as the water level in the toilet bowl is above the bend, no...

    CCTV Card or dedicated DVR

There's more than one proper way, mryoung :) Standalone pvrs show significant issues if you need to expand the system or have more commercial needs. My choice would be ip cameras - they're all I use. Far more flexibility in wiring, scalability etc.

    extractor fan vent under floorboards

You need to find out what he means. It needs to vent outside via a sealed pipe. Discharging into the house anywhere is definitely not a good plan.

    Asbestos or not? Help required....

I stand corrected - never knew that! But yeah, very very unlikely. I get frustrated at ill-informed hysteria from all angles whenever this stuff is mentioned. It's the extreme end of the stories supposedly blamed on "Health and safety gone mad" - often no truth or bad interpretation of the facts.

    Asbestos or not? Help required....

It's vermaculite mixed with cement. It's the standard way to insulate around chimney liners and behind firebacks. I don't know of any asbestos containing product that looks like that and has no visible fibres. No reason anyone would have used it in that situation even if there was. It's...

    rstrui.exe

These are getting increasingly common - the fake AV stuff is very plausable and professional looking now, and gets past several modern AV systems (Seen it walk right past Eset and AVG at least), and it gets rooted in very deep. Joinerjohn's advice is good, by the way. Losing file associations...

Help fitting a pump to boost gravity fed hot water

If it's added before the T-piece, of course it will overflow. It'll keep pumping, never being able to achieve enough pressure to stop. If it's added below, it could easily suck air in from that vent. But I'm confused. Why, in your diagram, is the hot water outlet side discharging into the...

    strenghening feathered edged fence,

Er, cleggy - if the posts were concrete it would not have made any difference here. Given the extra weight they would probably have moved more. If closed-board fence moves, the posts aren't in deep enough. 2 foot for an 8' post is not the third recommended. You can get away with 25% footed if...

Using 22mm in the middle of a 15mm installation

Note - I'm not an expert in fluid dynamics, but I don't think it's that simple. Judging from the little I learned when researching flow rates, only the center mass of the water moves in any significant way. In this instant, I imagine there would be a ~15mm column of water moving through the...

    Concrete..

Next day is easier, since the concrete is still a little soft and doesn't hold onto the shuttering so much. But - if there is ANY chance of people walking on it, leave it up as they'll knock the corners off. They're vulnerable for at least a week. That's usually just a cosmetic issue, but it...

    What material to preserve fence

Do not use the Cuprinol water-based sprayable stuff. Sure, it's easy to put on, but it was flaking after less than a year on new wood. Not cheap either - about £14 for four litres.

    Ringing 999, and what for?

Sorry to hear that, hope she's ok. I've used it for three RTA's (One which happened alongside me and was quite upsetting - the guy eventually made it, but was in ICU for months), two car fires, five horse rider falls (including my wife who broke her pelvis) and four other medical (two this...
