    Strimmer/Brushcutter

That's too big an area to comfortably do with an electric strimmer every week. All electric strimmers are rubbish. (At least when compared to petrol ones). Totally avoid battery ones except for "oh, there's a dandelion over there, I've got just the tool" type scenarios for people who work so...

    Dropline Query

BT own it to your master socket, and should replace it free of charge if it's faulty. Establishing that it is, and getting them to do something about it, is not always the most enjoyable or speedy thing in the world. Report a fault, mention pops and crackles on the line during voice...

    Kettles

Bought stainless morphey - died after a month, replacement died. Gave up and bought a supermarket kettle for a tenner. Been going three years so far. It amazes me that people can design a bad kettle. It's a kettle, ffs! Probably the simplest electrical good you can have and has been a staple...

How much do Howdens charge for laminate flooring?

Bit of a daft question without specifying type or quantity. Howdens give 70% discount to trade customers, same as Jewsons and others. So even if a price was obtained, what builder paid would not be what was advertised. It's not untypical, or unreasonable, for a builder to charge for...

JG Speedfit - is it rubbish or am I?

I've had rodent damage to the fittings themselves - chew marks but not all the way through. Never had any rodents chew through the pipe itself though, either speedfit barrier stuff, or the blue mdpe, and I've got miles of that through high-rodent areas. I have a theory it's too soft for...

JG Speedfit - is it rubbish or am I?

Speedfit is fine - if: you cut squarely (secateurs are just as good as the proper cutters btw!), if the pipes are square to the fitting and can't flex, and if you push them ALL the way in. If they freeze, speedfits push the whole joint apart so you have big leaks after, but that does mean for...

    toilet 2-button flush

Try it with the lid of the cistern off. (The ones I've seen, the central bit around the buttons unscrews with finger pressure) Inside there'll be a tube with two levers, watch the water level and press one. Let it refill and press the other. If they're the same, my guess is something has...

    Grundfos Homepump

Mini digger for a day's hire = about a hundred to two hundred quid. 25mm MDPE is cheap as chips. The joints aren't, but one every 50M isn't so bad. If your ground is stony you might want some sand to bed it in, but often you won't. Seriously good fun too! Phone turned off, radio turned on...

Best way to remove a large tree stump?

As someone who used to do exactly that, I think you have an excellent chance. Clearing up and leaving things tidy enough to please the landowner is the most expensive and time consuming part - if the landowner is prepared to do that for a bit of extra cutting, bargain! If everyone did that it'd...

Best way to remove a large tree stump?

Er, you cut it down to ground level with a chainsaw /before/ you start grinding. Grinding's only needed once you go below soil level. Insurance is a big part of it as well as access here. If taken away, wild arm-waving guess of about 600-850 (I will be wrong since it's 20 years since I...

That's a very handy link. Short answer is yes, by the way, unless you're doing silly fps and have mahoosive resolutions.

    making shelves..

Most proper timber yards will cut to measure, but may make a small charge on top of the timber costs. It's often worth it however. Probably won't do melamine faced boards, but painted MDF does a nice finish and they will have a wide choice. They might do exactly what you want.

Where can i buy a 5 lever deadlock and sashlock keyed alike?

There's a few locksmiths on the net who'll do keyed-alike sets too. I got several sets a couple of years ago that way.

    Grundfos Homepump

Sorry, no experience of that, but why 5k to replace your pipe? Surely you just need a couple of day's minidigger hire, some 25mm polyprop, a few hours to bring it into the house and hook it in? That's under 250 quid, so surely the waterco don't charge the rest for changeover?

    Excess silicone

"Silicone Eater" (screwfix sell a cheap alternative) /does/ work for these thin layers you describe. Paint it on and rub the lot off with a rag. Anything more than the thinnest layer then a razor blade is best. BTW, don't use the eater without good ventilation or you'll be seeing fairies in...

Best way to remove a large tree stump?

They did a fair job of getting that down in a small area - not the easiest trees to work on either. You can get smaller stump grinders, much like little rotivators. They'll just take longer. What about cutting it into a chair shape with a chainsaw? We've done that for a good few stumps and...
