    Drilling Tiles

Also when you push in the rawlplugs make sure you push them deep into the hole behind and past the tile. If the top of the plug sits flush with the tile surface it will expand and crack the tile when screw your fixings to them. Very simple lesson that I learned the hard way

    Faulty Electric Meter?

Thanks for the replies. NPower sent an engineer out yesterday afternoon who changed the meter over for an identical one. I went over last night and changed most of her lightbulbs over for energy saving bulbs. The house is empty for most of the day and Ive told her to keep an eye on what...

    Fitting a upvc door!!

Shop around the local window/door fitters. It may be cheaper to buy direct from a manufacturer in the long run cos the rubbish I've seen for sale in some of the DIY shops aren't up to standard anyway. Also a wooden door may be cheaper than a PVC door and is usually a lot stronger too.

    Faulty Electric Meter?

One the one hand she's paid almost feck all for towards her electricity for the last 12 months so I can sort of understand why NPower would want to try and bill her for this. But on the other hand can they really guess a figure and enforce it without being able to prove exactly what has been...

    GU 10 problems

I was having this same problem a while back. We have GU10 bulbs fitted into the kitchen ceiling and every week at least one of the bulbs would go bang when the light switch was switched on. At first I thought there was a problem with the wiring but I have been told that the problem arises...

    Faulty Electric Meter?

Thats what I thought really. I can't see how they can come up with any old figure (which potentially they could) and then demand that she pay it. I've told her to get in touch with the CAB anyway and see what they say. Thanks for the reply

    Faulty Electric Meter?

Howdo folks. A female friend of mine has a card electric meter fitted inside a house she bought over a year ago. It now transpires that the meter is faulty and hasn't been charging enough credit. It is her first home and it has never occured to her that she might not be paying enough...

    Draft proofing windows

Well you could always try and get permission to have secondary glazing installed although these might have to be approved by the local authorities first to make sure they dont effect the appearance of the building. I've seen secondary glazing fitted inside some old mansion houses before...

best way of cleaning upvc window frames

You shouldn't really be using anything else but mild washing-up liquid although I know of someone who once used white T-cut to clean his frames. Never tried it on window myself though

    oh dear! opinions please.

Pickles. If you are happy with what you paid for then at the end of the day it doesn't really matter what anybody else thinks. If you feel they did a good job for a fair price then thats the important thing. I aren't saying that all "local" window companies are honest. There are...

    oh dear! opinions please.

If you're happy with your windows then I am happy for you and who can argue? Was it his charm or the final price which swayed you? But you tell me, how can a suited monkey sit on your sofa for 5 hours and then give you an accurate price without pulling out a tape measure or taking...

    oh dear! opinions please.

The first mistake you made here was contacting a national window company. Always stick with your small, local family owned window campanies. I have heard so many stories about Safestyle and Coldseal etc. The guy who visited your house knows absolutely nothing about windows and doors which...

    Transit Van - security

I too drive a Transit and last year I was shown the very easy way to disable the lock in the rear doors with just the use of a long sharp blade. I won't tell how it is done for obvious reasons but I went out to my van one morning last year. The door was closed and there was absolutely no...

    See thru mirrors

You will need Pilkington Surveillance Mirror and you need to consider your light ratio's before you waste your money on something that probably wont work for that application. It also can be fairly espensive to buy and you'll need the laminated safety version. The light ratio required is 7:1...

    Condensation in between double-glazing

The chances of opening the unit without breaking the glass is very very slim and usually done at your own risk which means you'll end up paying for a new unit anyway. The only time I ever open a unit is when I want to re-use any internal Georgian bars. The glass itself always breaks when I...

    Cleaning Stone

I find Jeyes Fluid is usually good for removing algae and dirt from paving stones and stone walls. Use a hard brush to scrub it in then hose it off.

I've just hit on a great idea. Why not just fit the wooden door within a wooden outer frame?

    chemical damproofing

I made a post about this last week. The Chemical Injection is not a cure to rising damp but merely a way to help reduce it. These companies can charge you hundreds of pounds for something that you can very easily do yourself in my opnion. You may even find that once you are £500+ out of...
