why dont you re-align the pipes you cut then just follow them back to the boiler and check which is which,your manual will tell you the sequence of order for the inlets/outlets on the boiler,the thermastatic valves coould be bi-directional and on either flow or return.failing that carry out all...

check outside where the boiler flu outlet is,you will see a copper pipe poking through the wall and it should be angled back towards the wall,as andy says if its dripping then you need the prv replacing,if not then you need to look under your downstairs floors for a leak.

take it to parts center and ask for a match..............job done!
