    Volkswagen LT Won't Start

No, 99% certain that's just a bad connection, probably on the heavy starter wire or earth return (if it has one) or heavy wire from solenoid to motor. Just get in there, see what it is, clean it up and re-make the connection. I don't think you need a new starter by the sounds of it.

Contractor cut through oil supply pipe!

It strikes me that those bunch of idiots would be far better employed dredging some rivers rather than acting the 'little man' and creating storms in teacups!

    Volkswagen LT Won't Start

In an ideal world you need to hit the solenoid, but thumping the starter main body can do the trick. Easy to tell if the battery is weak and causing the problem - just start it with the headlights on, if they reduce to a dim glow then obviously the battery voltage is dropping too much under load.

Contractor cut through oil supply pipe!

I know someone with an old steel tank that rusted through and deposited a thousand litres or so of kero into the soil. It never caused any problem at all. (that he was aware of!)

    Volkswagen LT Won't Start

Sticking solenoid on the starter motor? - fairly common. Turn the switch to the 'start' position while you have a mate wallop the starter (main body - not any bakalite parts!) with a crow bar (or whatever heavy you have to hand that you can get to it with)

Contractor cut through oil supply pipe!

It strikes me that the OP should be partly culpable for not indicating in the first instance to the contractor the location of the pipe - he clearly knew of its routing.

Cooling fans on Rover 45 TD

As the car is pretty old now (banger status :-( ) and if finding the problem is a headache then you can always run a wire via a switch to the fan so you can switch it on yourself. You'd only need to do this when stuck in traffic for lengthy periods. Make certain first that you're confident...

    best used van?

I think your mates right. The 6 speed boxes (if that's what it has - 5 speed boxes are OK) are absolutely famous for developing a bearing failure requiring an expensive strip down and repair. I think the engine is Fiat, with 138K on it it will be just ripe for a clogged EGR, inlet manifold...

Best time of year for Creosoting

Nah, still manufactured by Bartoline (proper coal tar based) and available from fence and gate suppliers. Just not sold at high street retail outlets.

Changes in Road Tax from October 1st 2014

Have I got this right: Let's say you sell your car with less that a months tax left on it. You cannot get a refund for this and the new owner can't (effectively) buy it with tax - he/she then has to immediately buy new tax? Sounds like another stealthy tax grab by the gubbinsment to me?

Share with care - cycling on the pavement.

I think it's the fact that the riders seem to have them set to flash on and off like an indicator bulb that doesn't help. I've managed to overcome to dazzling effects of these new HID and LED car headlamps (compared to the old Halogen) by making a determined effort to look slightly away from...

Share with care - cycling on the pavement.

Both, my eyes can spot a single light just as surely as several. They've never failed me in 52 years, nor have I ever run up the back of a motorcycle or bike sporting a single solid light. But specifically I'm intrigued by this modern fad of all these forward facing intense LED headlamps...

Share with care - cycling on the pavement.

A lovely argument but a fallacy IMO. HM Coastguard sticks a lighthouse on the rocks so the ships can avoid them. Sticking 20 lighthouses on the same rock won't help things. I think this 'array' of lights thing is a willy waving exercise....

Share with care - cycling on the pavement.

Changing the subject a bit, what's with all these flashing LED headlamps that cyclists seem to have a fetish for nowadays? I find these lights normally aimed squarely into the faces of oncoming motorists (me) and although I can't describe why, seem to nullify ones sense of speed and judgement...

''A New Form of Heating From Germany''

Heat loss from a boiler varies from about 40% to about 5% I think, depending on its design, although I'm no expert on this matter. So given the price of gas or oil I think it's safe to say that conventional central heating is probably cheaper (obvious as a generalisation) that electric radiators.

Peugeot 106 Diesel 1.5 Fuel Pump leak (1996)

Yes, in my experience 18 months is not an unreasonable expectation especially if you do a lot of short journeys. Look for that throttle quadrant microswitch and if you find it and it looks easy enough then slacken the (plastic) cam retaining bolt and rotate the cam so the switch is always...

Peugeot 106 Diesel 1.5 Fuel Pump leak (1996)

If this engine (The XRAD) is similar to the XUD (1.7 & !.9) engine then the last offerings from Peugeot chewed up the glow plugs much quicker than the early engines. This is because they incorporated a much longer post-start glow timer and so they are on for 5 or 6 times longer than...

''A New Form of Heating From Germany''

Yes indeed, I realise this, though as there is no such nuclear fusion or fission taking place inside a biscuit tin I fail to see the relevance of the point?

''A New Form of Heating From Germany''

But that light hits an object (the inside of the biscuit tin) and is converted to heat. Energy, like matter, cannot be created or destroyed. I think Julian
