Try disabling the Defense+ permanently in the advanced settings and restarting you computer. Then once rebooted activate Defense+ in the advanced settings and restart again.

By extrernal USB drive do you mean and external hard drive? Or a USB memory stick? If you can get the computer to boot from the W98 disc and it recognises your hardware it should give you the option to format the hard drive so you dont need to worry about whats already on the hard drive...
