    As far as I'm aware Virgin medias security is a rebadge kaspersky, my flat mate uses it its rather good and shes had no problems. I personally use windows firwall and security essentials and have had no problems.

    Totaly agree, but its not recommended that you take a heatsink off then put it back on without removing and applying new thermal paste. Mainly because of the reasons you've pointed out.

    I used to have a duff MB thats integrated nic never showed up until the computer was warm. Sounds like a hardware issue if its like this. One way to confirm this for sure, burn a livecd of linux (mint is a good option) boot the computer up with this and if the sound aint working its def not...

    I've come across connection problems like that that were malware caused by either being infected by them of having removed them. After that I always check specific applications which is why I asked about the browser, then resetting the winsock and tcp/ip sack completely rules out the computer...

    formatting hard drive with vista

    I've been using vista since sp1 and its fine as long as you can run it. Much better than xp. I'm upgrading to 7 soon as its meant to be less resource hungry. If I had a computer that couldn't run vista I'd plum for linux over xp everytime.
