    Go here: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads_gd.html follow the instructions and find the laptop and theres all the drivers for it including the audio drivers. Not to sound paranoid but have you checked for malware?

    Hardly think we're poking around in the dark, malware is always the first thing you check, then applications, resetting the the the tcp/ip settings on the computer which is what winsockxpfix does eliminates another area.

    He might have a recovery partition which is usually accessible on boot by pressing F2. Once in the recovery console you can do a full reinstall. I wouldn't bother with XP anymore. What sort of problems is he having I'm of the opinion that a reinstall is a last resort.

    Ok so it aint the browser. Now did the scans you did find anything?? Since your email is working its not the connection probably some settings. Download WinSockXPFix and run it see if that fixes things.

    Its not a reinstall but a recovery as already mentioned. If all else fail you can borrow a copy from the internet and burn it to a cd.

    Any of them will do. DVDRW I use if I'm going to overwrite the data at some point. Question is are you just backing them up or do you actually want to watch them?

    OK %systemroot%system32\dumprep0-k is from dumprep.exe and you dont have to accept it, its to do with your crash. The crash could be caused by anything, if the message says hard drive it could be back sectors or just windows playing up. The numbers you need are probably the port numbers...
