Good point Burnerman - hopefully it is well seasoned American White Oak and not Red.

    Internal Window sill/bottoms fixing

If you have any offcuts of the oak, you could always core and plug if you have to screw it down. If you are careful matching the grain it is virtually undetectable.

How to disguise hairline crack in wood/board?

Black wax. Buy a candle and rub it across the crack a few times.

    Re-Enammelling a Bath

Been there done both things. When we had the house completely renovated 20 odd years ago, we had the old Edwardian, huge, ball and claw feet bath taken out and taken to a proper re-enameler, It wasn't cheap, but in the context of the total bill for the renovation work, it wasn't overly...

    Bunk beds. Taking them apart

Years ago, when our girls were much younger and the house much smaller we had bunk beds. The bunk beds split really easily into two singles when required. The bed legs of the upper bunk located on the legs/posts of the bottom bed purely on a stainless rod. Whether this would now comply...

    Bedroom wardrobe cornice

I'm not a joiner, bedroom fitter or chippy, but.. I would make the join a 45/135 degree cut. I think this always looks better and is easier to 'hide' the join, as long as you can cut accurately.

    Anyone recognise my Skirting design?

If it is just the top profile, run it through a band saw and take the top off.

Help - what is this called?

This is similar to the balustrading that runs across the front of our Edwardian house. I needed to replace one of the short sides as it was beyond repair. I found a local joiner's shop and got him to turn a bunch of spindles for me (including a few spares) I then fabricated the 'easy' bits...

    Internal door hanging tolerances

Blimey!!! Best I get ready for an early morning raid by the H&S Police!! Every door in our house has a hardwood threshold <gulp>. This weekend I will be buying a pot of camouflage paint...

    new hearth too low

You aren't pouring wet concrete into shuttering - you are using a stiff'ish cement/mortar mix to bed the hearth onto - very similar to laying a slab based garden path using 'dot and dab'. The mix needs to be stiff enough to stay where it is put and to support the weight of the hearth. try...

    Hanging a mirror

Deffo use wire! Apart from the peace of mind, cord will stretch and 'bounce' making it more difficult to hang it just where you want it. ETA Even think about using mirror plates, it is what I use for anything heavy that I don't want swinging about if people brush past it.

    Pest control -mice?

Whatever you do, don't say that to our ancient black and white Pompey Dockyard Rescue Moggy!! She would give any Ginger or Tabby a run for their money. Our two Border Terrorists are pretty good as well - they have cleared out a couple of nests this year already. But you will never get rid...

Does a rented bedroom need a window?

Ooooooh... This is interesting. Youngest Daughter rents a room in a shared house in London. The room is a good size and clean and well decorated, it even has a decent TV fitted to the wall, but... The room has no window - nothing! I don't think it has any kind of extra ventilation...

    shelves on false wall

Like the backplate idea. If you were using suitably thick ply, would you consider routing a rebate across the width for the shelves to sit in rather than using brackets. The shelves are solid pine so shouldn't need support across the front over that distance...

    Carpet Size

There is quite an art to working out how much carpet is needed. It depends on roll width, repeat pattern, room configuration, particularly if you are running through the entire suite of rooms. Any carpet fitter is going to need all of that kind of information before coming up with a...
