    Opening fireplace

you better check to see if the wall is supported first - last thing you need is the opportunity to grace the "DIY Disasters" pages!! The bricks won't be keyed in to the existing hole so any strikes will loosen the surrounding (new) wall, leaving the existing fireplace bricks relatively...

    Opening fireplace

if they left the lintel in, no ( & chances are they would have) It could only be a small steel bar 3'x3"x0.5" or it could be a huge great monster depending on the weight its carrying. In my Bungalow conversion the lintel was tiny as it only supported the bricks to ceiling height - in fact if...

    Push fit plumbing

you can use polypipe right up within 1.2m of the boiler/combi etc. You must make sure that you either use the same type fittings that are currently installed (as the internal Dia are different which can cause "blow-offs", or you can use the compression type (also used on copper). Its...

    Tracking copper pipes into wall

why not sleve the pipes down to 10 or 8 mm before you sink in to the wall. That way you've pleanty of room for the skim etc and the chances of heat craks are minimised as the paster depth is greater and the pipe expansion less. BTW I bought 12 cans of expandable foam (750ml) off ebay for £30...

    floorboards soaked with machine oil

We have bought boards from factories before now. They are deeper than normal boards and when oil soaked found there's no chance of cleaning them. They also emit a constant smell (like the outside of a garage!), and any rugs etc left on will absorb some of the stain. We’ve always removed them...
