Paint lifting off window frame (interior)

Evening Ken! If the window ever had shellac or stain, it would have been decades ago, but I suspect it was white paint from the start (1914). When we moved in, it was painted white. Even if there was shellac, I think it’s unlikely that the latest coat of paint would react with something...

Paint lifting off window frame (interior)

Hi Ken, The window was already painted white, as far as I know with ordinary solvent-based paint. We just got the decorators to give it a new coat with Duluxe Satinwood. It’s 100 years old so I don’t know how it had been painted in years gone by, but every house on the road has white windows so...

Paint lifting off window frame (interior)

We moved into a house a year ago with a lovely 100-year-old bay window. The paint on it was a few years old but otherwise it seemed in good condition. We had decorators in right away who, amongst other things, painted the window. Last night I noticed that substantial cracks have appeared in the...

Do I need to fully remove old paste before re-lining?

I've just finished stripping an old plaster wall, and it's a real nightmare to get the final remnants of wallpaper paste off - it feels pretty smooth to the touch, but if I wet the wall with hot water and run a scraper over it, it picks up a small amount of gunk. However much I go over it, I...

    Understood. Thanks for the explanation.

    Calk join between attached houses

Just to check - the gap will go all the way between the houses? Or could this just be for the exterior wall?

    Calk join between attached houses

Thanks. So that would mean two separate concrete walls with a (tiny) gap - I assume this is actually better for sound isolation between the properties than traditional brick wall with no gap?

    Calk join between attached houses

What is this vertical line of calk between two new-build attached houses - does it go all the way through between 2 separate walls? Can it tell me anything about how the dividing wall is constructed and whether it's likely to have good sound insulation? Thanks.

Noise from sink when toilet flushes

This is the trap (it fits into a wooden drawers unit): http://www.bauhaus-bathrooms.co.uk/product/bauhaus-accessories-basin-traps/furniture-basin-trap/#product_info I've read that this can be a problem venting (air getting pulled through the sink when the toilet flushes) - would an...

Noise from sink when toilet flushes

Sorry - been editing the post trying to get the youtube tag to work. I've left it as just the youtube url now. Does that work?

Noise from sink when toilet flushes

My sink makes a noise when the toilet is flushed - see video below. The bathroom is newly installed. Any idea what's causing this? Is it likely to cause any damage and is there an easy fix? http://youtu.be/w2nWi7sUmb4

Jet of water from top of rain shower

Yes! It turns out there was a missing washer and also a missing grub screw. No idea what the guy from Crosswater was on about! Thanks for all the help.

Jet of water from top of rain shower

I just spoke to the manufacturer of the shower head (crosswater) and apparently that hole is meant to be there - there's no grub screw. They said that if water is shooting out of it, it means my water pressure is too high and the head is probably bust  They are sending me a flow...

Jet of water from top of rain shower

Why do I need to redrill and tap? Couldn't I just find a grub screw to fit that hole?

Jet of water from top of rain shower

You were right! It looks like it is threaded after all. What sort of screw do I need for this? I assume a normal one will just rust!

Jet of water from top of rain shower

I don't have it in front of me at the moment, but I don't think there's a thread. The whole head screws directly into the pipe arm, so it doesn't seem to need tightening from an extra screw.

Jet of water from top of rain shower

My new bathroom has a Crosswater fixed shower head. When I turn it on a little jet of water shoots out of what looks like a screw hole above the head (picture attached). Any idea what this is?
