when you turned the lockshields off did you count the no. of turns and re-open at the same amount??

if the rads are hot when others are off then the system is not correctly balanced. as you say the pump not being powerful enough can cause the same prob (ie rads hot when not all open) - have you got a 3 port valve or 2 x 2 ports?

either there is air in the system (airlock some where) / try venting pump / all air vents / rads etc (make sure any aav' are working properley) - or sludge in the system is blocking off some pipes/rads / or the pump is not powerful enough for all the rads (long shot) - but may be case as all...

yeah i agree, boiler may overheat if airlock (lack of circulation) and overheat stat trip and need re-setting. but if older boiler and no overheat stat - then pumping over may occur - but not pilot go out!!! was a weird one!!

yes that is true - without an overheat stat a sealed system is dangerous - as if the boiler stat fails (sticks) and there is no vent pipe/ f & e cistern to take the steamed / water a big big problem will occur.

that is true - the old boilers made of cast iron were larger and a lot better - although the new boiler's have an overheat stat and things that prevent pumping over, (esp if a sealed system)!! :) - so no pumping over

Yeah i suppose an airlock - i didn't backfill, just filled normally via the header tank float valve. Can I ask you one more q please seco: can the heat exchanger be the cause of pumping over (into header tank)? the symptoms seemed like boiler stat failure to me but maybe not?! :oops:

i agree i have learned here, but as you say it is harder to not see pics, and it could be a range of things etc.... probably makes you better though having to think all the time! do you find fault finding and sloving things a lot easier in real life when you go to jobs?

i have learned a lot the past 2 years or so, but still learn all the time, and you know 50 x what i do but are still always learning!!

don't make any rash decisions - maybe all you need is a good system clean as it seems very sludged up .... let us know, all the best.
