Well there have been loads of posts on this forum about preferred boilers etc. I like Remeha Broag, quite a few like Viessmann, Vaillant, Worcester Bosch etc etc. Listen to your RGI and see what he prefers.

Yep block the vent and hook up the main to the cold feed. Run a drain/dump hose from a drain cock to a drain. Isolate the boiler if you can. Open all radiators and let the mains work a fair bit of the carp from the system. Then close all the rads except one and let the mains flush...

You get what you pay for with electric showers. 8.5kw is a bit carp, my girlfriend has 8.5kw Aqualisa Quartz in her flat and its not very good tbh. I'd advise you get a 9.5kw +. Ok it will cost more but you will gain a better perfoming shower. You might have to upgrade the cable size also...

I'd run it for a while with X400 and then give it all a good mains flush through. Then give the F&E a good scrub out. Should remove most of the carp out the system.
