    Cutting Slabs

I have cut some with a stone disc and they do wear out quickly. But I found it best to cut a groove in the slab, on both sides, then split the slab with a lump hammer and cold chisel. The finished edge is not smooth, but was ok for the purpose I wanted.

    Help with evergreen shrubs ?

I think Mahonia Aquifolium is a good low growing shrub. It is evergreen, the new growth is a lovely shade of green. It bears yellow flowers in the spring, and leaves turn red in the autumn. It spreads but not too invasive. I also find that it is an excellent plant for tubs.

replacing turf with a raised bed

I did a similar job late last year, replaced part of the lawn, with a raised bed. I used the old double digging method. Remove the first strip of turf, lay aside, dig a small trench on the exposed ground, remove the next strip of turf, turn upside down and lay at the bottom of the trench, then...

    Path/border edging

I have dug gullys around my paths, about 4"wide and 4" deep, and in some places have laid about 2" of concrete at the bottom of the gully, other places filled up with ornamental bark. This is particularly useful for mowing the lawns, and getting quite a neat finish

    brown patches

Are they brown patches, or straw coloured? I did have this problem last year for a time, and was using a cylinder mower. This year, I have changed to a rotary mower, and this has solved the problem. I think the patches I was getting was because of slight uneveness in the ground, and a few...

    Pruning Roses

I prune mine in March. Can you tie the climbing rose to something? I do not think it would do lasting damage by pruning now, but you would of course lose some flowers.

    driveway paint????

I have seen a concrete drive today, recently laid, and it has a glossy painted finish. Looked horrible I thought. Have you tried a pressure washer? I find that concrete slabs are improved by sprinkling with damp sand, then brushing off with a stiff brush.

I always throw the old compost on to the garden, doing this regularly helps to condition the soil.

    Slopes, moss and clay lawn.

25-30 Square feet, is that right? I had this problem with my daughter's garden. To level it, is hard laborious work, and obviously you would need to remove the existing grass, and then relay the whole area. I dug a trench on the lower side, about 1'0 wide and 1.0 deep, laid drain pipes into...

    Garage wall eyesore

I had this problem a few years ago, I was also worried that the garage, was so insecure it might fall down, particularly if one of us accidentally stumbled into it. I put up a trellis fence on my side of the boundary, and grew climbers up it, this worked fine. The only problem is that climbers...

New World Apex 500 Gas Cooker

I think the New World Apex is a good cooker, and I would certainly enquire from a local Corgi installer about the price for replacing the thermostat. Would probably give you several more years of wear. Nowadays, this type cooker with an eye level grill is not so popular, slot in cookers with a...

    cleaning cement from brickwork

? Do you mean smudged with mortar. I think it is very difficult to remove except by wire brushing. All the patio and brickwork cleaners will clean the mortar as well as the bricks.

    Electric Lawn Mowers

I have been using electric machines for many years, and have always gone for the cylinder type. But, for the last few months I have been using a hover rotary mower. Although I do not get the desirable stripes with it, I have noticed that the general appearance of the lawn is much better...
