Is there a little "thimble"fuel filter in the carb inlet? Had similar symptoms to you on a mk1 astra,found the filter full of crud,cleaned it and all ok. Another thing to consider,is that the carb float may be stuck in the "up" position,so keeping fuel out of the carb.

Just had a thought Topcat.On some of the Peugeot-Citroen engines,the bit on the engine which I think has damaged threads is bolted on itself so is not part of the engine.If this is the case,you could unbolt it and take it to whoever you find to heli-coil it.

As it takes the same amount of work to get at it,I nowadays recommend changing the thermostat on Corsa's while the belt is off.Also,as you know little about it's history have a new coolant mix in.The corrosion proofing additives deteriorate after 2 years or so on most anti-freeze.
