Ford Focus 03 No screen washer

The washer fuse is behind the glove box. It's the most awkward one to get to, in the top left hand corner.

    Hardest DIY jobs

I'm reasonably good a most things, but the one thing that totally baffles me is the wiring for the hall and landing, where you can switch on a light downstairs, then go upstairs and turn it off.

As always, good advice from Mr. Burnerman.

    wipers not working

The wiper linkage might have jammed/bent, and this is blowing the fuse as the motor is still trying to 'park' when you put the new fuse in.

    Snow tyre clanger

Don't forget, the ABS speed sensors are on the driveshafts (or c.v joints) on the front, so they are monitoring the rotational speed of the shafts not the wheels. The system will compare all the sensors, front and rear, and will compare them. Any discrepancies, and the light will be on. I doubt...

    spare key in locked car

You don't say how old the car is, but if it's the very latest Corsa, they are difficult to gain access to. I have done it, but it took me approximately an hour to do. I didn't damage the car in any way. I can't place the information on here for obvious reasons. The easier way is to take your...

    Snow/winter tyres

If the vehicle is designed to have a spare wheel but doesn't have one, Recovery organisations will refuse any recovery, and may help to get a spare wheel and tyre during daylight hours if it doesn't take up too much time. They also carry equipment to temporarily repair the punctured tyre if...

    Snow/winter tyres

Finilec is no good if you've got a gash in your tyre John. Most types of the foam stuff you get instead of a wheel is useless. Some of them are 'glue' based, this means that as well as temporarily repairing the puncture, they glue the tyre to the rim so that when you go to get the simple...

    Snow/winter tyres

Yeah, that's true, and I don't know how that gets past the legislation. I still can't get my head around how some manufacturers (Vauxhall), fit 15" wheels to the car, and then giving you a 14" spare.

    Snow/winter tyres

The advice that some manufacturers give you, is to put the spare on the non driven axle, and move the good wheel from that axle, to the driven axle - but nobody ever bothers. You will find on some 4x4 vehicles, that the spare will not fit over the brake calipers on the front wheels, so you HAVE...

    Which sparkplug

Stick to what the manufacturer recommends for your vehicle. There are complex reasons why some engines use iridium spark plugs, mainly due to the 'quenching' effect of the plug on the air/fuel mixture. That's why iridium plugs have pinpoint electrodes. I recommend NGK plugs (and so do Rolls...

Diesel Vectra B - does not start from new battery

Checking the condition of your battery with a voltmeter is not an accurate test of your battery's condition. To check with a voltmeter correctly : put the meter on the battery. If it reads 12.2 volts (or above), it should be capable of starting the engine. If it drops to less than 9.0 volts...

    re=antifreeze in screenwash?

Don't use washing up liquid in there either. Sick to the the screenwash products that you can buy, or add some methylated spirits.

    number plate lights

Number plate lights are fed from one of the sidelight circuits. These are fused independently on each side. You need to get a circuit tester and check for a live and earth on each bulb holder.

    ldv key code on barrel???

If you take the lock off the door, a good locksmith will be able to strip the lock and make a new key to fit the tumblers.

    interference engine or not

It will indeed snap the rocker arms. These are deliberately made weak so as to act as a type of "Fuse" if you like, to prevent the valves from bending. Just remove top cover and replace the arms. The big issue is the timing belt, as this drives the water pump, and the water pump swivels in an...

    Vauxhall Corsa ECU re-set

A 99 reg Corsa will not need an E.C.U re-set or upgrade when replacing the EGR valve. To check a valve, remove it from the car, and you will see that the disc on the bottom of it is not sitting closed on it's seat. Pull it shut with a pair of long nosed plies then re-fit the valve. You can leave...

    Diagnostic trouble code

John, you could try disconnecting the air mass sensor, then road test the car. The mass sensor will default to a mid range setting and obviously put the MIL light on, but if you don't get an oxygen sensor fault, it could be that.
