Leaving engine running without keys in

Sorry chaps, I've been working. A machine sensed alternator is fitted with permanent magnets, so as soon as you spin it, it creates an electrical current. If this current has nowhere to go because it's not connected to a circuit, it will go back into the field windings, and this will create an...

Leaving engine running without keys in

Some alternators are 'machine sensed', and if these are rotated without being connected to a circuit, then they will be destroyed. However, I suspect yours is 'battery sensed'. Therefore, if the field windings are not energised (which they won't be if the ignition is turned off), then it will be...

You're missing the point. When you buy a kit of ANYTHING, there are parts supplied that you don't necessarily need as you might have these already. I recently had the pump changed on my central heating. The guy removed the new pump from the housing it came with, as I already have a housing...

    Battery Terminal problems

No. If everything is clean and tight, there should be no resistance (voltage drop test will confirm this). There would have to be a tremendous resistance to create enough heat to melt the solder. If you managed to get that heat, the wiring loom would have melted before the battery terminals.

    Battery Terminal problems

I normally slacken the clamp right off and prise it open. Fit it back on and wedge some strips of wire solder between the clamp and the battery. As you tighten the clamp, the solder will crush and make a tight fit. Solder is electrically conductive and will give you a better connection than the...

    Peugeot 1.6HDi particulate filter message

There are 2 types of emmission control for particulate filters. Some have an additive which requires topping up at approximately every 30,000 miles. This needs to be done by a dealer as it requires some re-setting with their diagnostic equipment. It's not too expensive, I was quoted £120 by a...

Toyota Corolla Verso noisy front end

Try and find a big open car park (closed supermarket, cinema etc), and drive the car round in circles on full left lock, then full right lock. You will probably hear a rythmic clicking or knocking noise from the wheels. if you hear it on right lock, it will be the LEFT c.v joint failing, and...

    fiat punto

I have a Punto sport, but it has the 8 valve engine. Can't remember which unit you need to change on the 16 valve without looking at it. Sorry.

You don't need to remove the aerial ring from around the ignition barrel. You need to change your e.c.u, and put the matching transponder chip in the ignition key. No need to change the ignition barrel, only the chip in the key.

I'm assuming that you've got the normal 8 valve engine ?? If so, then it's the part with the throttle butterfly in it.

    WRONG SIZE TYRE???

Some cars come with say 16" wheels, but have a 15" spare. Vauxhall are fond of doing this. I have a Fiat Punto, which has a "space saver" spare, read: "money saver" !!. I bought a full sized wheel from a scrap yard, but the well in the boot isn't deep enough for this wheel as it's only designed...

    astra 1.6sxi 53 plate

The transponder chip is in the key, and the receiver aerial is a coil of wire around the ignition switch. If you were thinking that you could remove this to disable your immobiliser system, you would be wrong ! The immobiliser can be electronically disabled by using complex diagnostic equipment...

    fiat punto

It's possibly the e.c.u as this is a (fairly) common failure. To diagnose this, you need something called a noid light or an l.e.d circuit tester, but definitely NOT a bulb type test lamp. Pull one of the plugs of the coil pack and link your circuit tester accross the terminals in the plug...

Skoda Octavia 2003 1.6i Airbag Light

Micky, what a load of rubbish you spout. Sisize is absolutely correct. The clockspring is not an actual spring, but a wiring ribbon inside/under the steering wheel. It's connected to the airbag, and is to prevent the wiring breaking when the steering wheel is turned from lock to lock. If this is...

Peugeot 206 1.4 Auto idling issue?

Keep on at the Dealer. An indepenent diagnostic specialist may solve the problem but he will charge you, and you've already paid once. If the dealer can't solve it with all their resources, I very much doubt that you will solve it yourself.

    megane 2 dci camshaft sensor

I'd go with the crankshaft sensor too. The wiring is tight, and they also suffer from bad connections. The sensor also gets covered in dust from the clutch. Remove it and give it a good clean, should be o/k.
