    Aaargh - leaking stopcock

Old house. Fitting new bathroom. No valves anywhere so figure I may as well install them. Find rising main. Locate secondary stop cock isolating main as it heads upstairs. Taps stop. Direct system. Great. Ready isolators. But secondary stop cock starts to leak from tap. A lot. Locate...

    2 way lighting

Hi Went to replace a pull cord with a standard light switch in a house we've bought. It's part of a 2-way arrangement and I was surprised to see that when I opened it up, the wiring was yellow to common, red to L1, and blue to L2 (obviously old colours). So I opened up the other switch on...

    Scissor Lift

Thanks for all your words of warning. I sort of feel compelled to answer. It's a new mid-rise lift which means it lifts the car about a metre. It's for personal use and there are companies that sell quite happily to diy mechanics (and I have to say, provide excellent telephone support). The...

    Scissor Lift

Fair comment, and of course you are right, although it would actually need to be poor work. So many things nowadays seem to relegate us to the presumption that everyone is only as capable as the lowest common denominator. Safest approach I guess, but I find it somehow sad also.

    Scissor Lift

It would be easier if the bloody waterbed didn't keep leaking on the electrics.

    Scissor Lift

Excellent replies thanks! Ha ha - fair comment, but think about it. The reason I am buying the scissor lift is that I like to do things with my hands (no hot tub jokes please). I could pay someone to re-condition my car, but if I can, I'd rather do it myself. Re competence - in years gone by...

    Scissor Lift

Hi All I am the proud owner of a new scissor lift, which is able to lift up cars. Most people at this point ask 'why?', but its probably best not to go there right now... After much grunting and wheezing, the lift has now been positioned in my garage and is ready for use. The thing is...

    Preparing for power

Thanks Ban Url for the shed http://www.gardensite.org.uk/logcabins/hytti.php. Helps if you have a crane or some sort of shot-putter to hand during construction. No doubt Mr. Sparky will decide if he uses a CU or a box (I thought a CU looked much more professional...). What I actually...

    Preparing for power

Thanks for this. They'll be nothing exciting in my shed apart from me, so I don't need telephone ducts etc. Do you think my 2.5mm SWA will be fine? They'll be no load to speak of in the shed so I would guess a 20A MCB would be fine in the garage. You've got me interested now. Why can't you...

    Preparing for power

Sorry - it's about sheds. But bear with me - I have done some searching, but have emerged confused, as you'd expect. Despite having wired in the odd ring main in the past I am well aware that nowadays I am not allowed to touch anything remotely electrical. But I'd still welcome your help in...
