    Lock for door

rim locks inside a house will instantly transform a normal domestic house into bedsit land. it will be very hard to repair the damage to the door, frame and architrave after. mortice locks are much less obtrusive mortice locks start at about £10. handles - about £7 a pair. you should easily...

Laws/rules regarding window locks on new windows?

i wouldn't worry about it. with a multi-point lock that you will have fitted there is really no need for a key in my opinion. the locks are already very resistant to being levered open, or the catch slipped unlike windows with older single point locks. if the burglar is determined enough...

    black water marks on wood

i used some osmo light oak polyx-oil foundation under the normal matt clear polyx oil in a similar situation recently, it did make the marks less obvious.

Fitting sealed units into wooden frames. Methods?

might be worth asking system3 for the name of a distributor that would deliver to you or a similar manufacturer down south

Fitting sealed units into wooden frames. Methods?

not in the south east i'm afraid. paying about £40 per sq.m incl VAT from system3 in manchester, don't think they would that they have a distributor down south. That's for top spec - soft coat low-E, warmedge spacer and argon fill. safety glass is extra.

    Flush Threshold advice

drains can block with dirt etc; why not have a small step , like 25mm then have a steady fall away from the door? it will hardly be noticeable

Fitting sealed units into wooden frames. Methods?

haven't seen sealed units with edging tape. modern ones have a butyl rubber seal on the edge between the glass panes. you may want to plant a small bead on the inside so the edge seal (usually specified as 12mm max) is not visible. it is very important to cover it on the outside so UV doesn't...

Fitting sealed units into wooden frames. Methods?

argon fill costs pennies (well ok a few quid) if your manufacturer has the facility to do it. my local guy doesn't so has to bring them in from elsewhere = £££

    Timber for Rabbit Hutch

is the preservative safe for rabbits? you might want to use a durable timber instead like western red cedar, larch or oak.

Fitting sealed units into wooden frames. Methods?

i get my tape from reddiseals - EPDM tape with lip is very good for the outside as it gives you a couple of extra mm coverage of the spacer. EPDM tape or Security glazing tape on the inside. Give the security tape a good wetting on the glass side. It will help you position the unit. It can...

Fitting sealed units into wooden frames. Methods?

drained and ventilated dry glazing (not butyl or silicone) is the way to go. allow 2mm for compressed 3mm tape each side. i would use security tape on inside rebate only for downstairs externally beaded windows. your idea for fitting beading to the face of the frame is an interesting one and...

standard thickness of DG glazing unit?

28mm and 24mm are both standard sizes when using 4mm float or tempered glass. if one or both faces is laminated then it could be 26mm or 28mm. many combinations are possible and thinner units are/have been used but mostly in timber windows i would think. a stanley knife blade (out of the...

Weather bar in groove cut into a flag?

i assume the door is inward opening if you are using a weather bar underneath? yes this will be fine if done right - and you seem to understand what's required. the flag you are putting the groove in is higher than the surrounding flags? ie an actual door step? make sure that there is plenty...

    Slighty Rotten Window Frame

i would recommend using a new section of timber - treated or a durable wood. you will still use a bit of filler in the gaps unless you're some amazing carpenter. the wood hardener is worth trying, it can't do any harm. see if you can provide some drainage to let water out of the wood. i am...

Cost estimate of double glazed panes

about £10-£15 a unit for float (non-safety) glass units. you could look at using stepped units, but it's not a great solution.

    strange windows

U-value for replacement windows must be 2.0 or less for wooden and upvc windows. this is for the whole assembly. Or if using non-certified frames, U-value for the glass must be 1.2 or less. Means using a soft-coat low-e glass not a hard-coat like pilkington K for example. Buliding control will...

Sealing sash window frame gap (pics)

i think that's what you had orginally - it tends to go brittle and crack over the years. sounds hard to clean up as well.
