Ceilings -how are they fixed ??

I've used some No10 4" chipboard screws with washers to pull up the hanging plasterboard in a few places. They screwed in ok & I didn't know where joists were. I picked random places to screw in. I don't think chipboard screws would hold in plasterboard, so that makes me think the board...

Ceilings -how are they fixed ??

How is a room ceiling fixed ?? The ceiling plasterboard in part of a room has dropped about 2 inches. Looking in the gap (between ceiling & board above it) it seems the fixings have pushed through the ceiling in that part of the room. The ceiling plasterboard seems fixed to board above...

And yes, I do live in Brighton. It must have been a strange place 110 years ago like it is now  , to introduce something like the "Brighton Pattern stopcock". Thanks to Harvey the Rabbit whoever that is & Nige F. Jack

Yes, that's what I'm basically saying. You think slackening the Left gland nut a little may help in allowing Left handle to turn off ?? Thanks Jack

I think what you are all saying is: -the Left valve can completely switch off supply through Right valve, to change the WASHER in Right valve main body. 1) Does this affect repacking Right valve gland nut ?? I don't think it does, does it ?? -Yes/No ?? As before for repacking Right...

Photos of the leaking stopcock on Lead mains: http://imageevent.com/jack999/leakingstopcock I think you may need to decipher this for me ?? So, does the Left valve control this needle valve then ?? Can I repack leaking Left valve gland nut or have I had it ?? And guess where I am ...

Photos of the leaking stopcock on Lead mains: http://imageevent.com/jack999/leakingstopcock I'm AMAZED you plumbers haven't seen a stop tap like mine before. I'm sure 100+ years ago they were all the rage !! Stop taps in old Edwardian/Victorian houses often won't have been changed...

We'll see what happens. I will let you know. That's always a danger with repair jobs, doing a bit too much ie. overtightening, using too much force, putting too much in when a little is enough. Thanks again :) Jack

Thanks for that. Now I have more idea, I will try repacking sometime -Right valve first, as I know the gland nut turns. Although thread may be worn as when I tried tightening a little, nut was slipping & not tightening up tight. (from what I remember)...

And this applies to both valves (Right-main valve & Left-balance valve) ?? Is this correct ?? Thanks Jack

I think I misunderstood where to put string (packing), as I don't know valve innards. Reading again, I think you mean: -Switch off valve. -Undo gland nut. -Wrap 2 turns waxed string around spindle base (shank). -Push string tight down into stuffing box (is this a groove ??). -Screw in...

Are you saying to push some additional string into the valve base (stuffing box) as well as wrapping around the nut thread (shank) ?? Thanks Jack Ps: I got this Plumber's Hemp, when someone suggested repacking, thinking that's what to use.

Photos of the leaking stopcock on Lead mains: http://imageevent.com/jack999/leakingstopcock The leaks are around inner handle spindle, NOT the threads. I thought repacking you are sealing the outer thread, aren't you ?? Would undoing & repacking gland nuts solve problem of leaks...

Photos of the leaking stopcock on Lead mains: http://imageevent.com/jack999/leakingstopcock Good question. I think Left valve might not be under pressure when Right valve is Off, but I'm not certain. I need to check. It's only just now I've wondered what the Left valve was for (never...

What do you mean ?? Do you mean: is water leaking from Left valve when Right valve is turned Off ?? Jack

Lead Mains & Leaking Mains Stopcock (-photos added)

    1) Is that dependant on size of Lead pipe, curious why in "Pounds" ?? 2) Is a possibility just to remove the Left valve body & screw on a Blank end termination (not sure what you guys call this), as long as it screws on, sealing with PTFE tape ?? ( Assuming you can actually remove the Left...
