plaster board to dry to skim

It 'MAY' just be that the plasterboard has been up for a long time and gathered dust from other building work in the property. I once did a simple (or so I thought) skim job on a stud wall that was built well over 12 month's previous. It was like skimming untreated week old bonding and very...

    PVA and Browning and thermalites???

Cheers guys, Well I guess it is my age and I am just slowing down!! Used hardwall today and I found it not that different from browning. Granted it didn't suck the first coat of finish in quite so much but I still had to work above my max heart rate!! :| Just have to price float and...

    PVA and Browning and thermalites???

thanks richard, I took a look at a bag of hardwall today and it said on the back not to be used with bonding agents but substrates with high suction should be treated with gyp-prime. BG site say no PVA as it doesn't do what their products do but then they would. I've searched...

    PVA and Browning and thermalites???

Thanks for replies. As for damping down I even use a hose where its possible but you know what thermalites are like, they can be soaked in a bath and still dry out in 20 mins. Scratch and floating go on no more than 10 mm each. I'll give hardwall a go on my next job. I must admit I...

    PVA and Browning and thermalites???

I know it says on a bag of browning that you shouldn't use pva prior to using it but why not!!!? The only reason I ask is because when I use browning on thermalites the scratch coat invariably cracks from drying out so quickly and on big walls when I skim I have to work my nuts off trying to...

    Skimming on top of emulsion

You say the paint had hair line cracks all over it when you painted fresh plaster before. Did you seal / prime the new plaster before painting?

    Advice on external render beading

I think I know what you mean, but I would recommend using uPVC cladding for the returns. Trying to make good smooth render so that no join is visible is almost impossible but if you don't mind this then cut back as you suggested and use stainless angle beads. Stick up with render which will...

    Removing ARTEX

Only had a couple of problems with artex ceilings in the past. Once the plaster just started bubbling and peeling off whilst trowelling. This wasn't the artex's fault though because the plaster just took the paint off of the artex leaving bare artex which I scored re pva'd and done it again...

    re skim

If you want to go over it again then I'd still suggest 2 coats, after all more practice for you. But you'll need prep first with 2 coats of PVA or one of thistle bond it or wickes stuff. Good luck.

Quick questions about Dot & Dab

ONLY use 12.5 when dot and dabbing in my opinion. 1 bag should fix two to three 8x4 PB's.

Plaster/Skimming over plasterboard thats shy of wall

Not too sure what you mean :? sounds straight forward but jobs like this have to be viewed first. Suggest getting a couple of quotes and expect to pay anything from £120 - £250.

    please can someone help

Depends how thick it has to go on. Best use bonding then skim or if it's only a small area and under 10mm thick you may get away with using easy fill which is really easy to sand down but costs alot more than bonding. good luck

    Dot and Dab

I don't think anyones trying to suggest using the wrong materials but lets not forget this is a DIY site and whilst the 'pros' comments are accurate and extremely helpful, some people who ask the questions just want a quick fix solution. There is more than one way to do a job - however if...

    Incompetent Plasterer?

Could be any number of reasons but rendering this time of year isn't ideal. How long did he leave between coats? Before Saturday ask him what ratio of mix he used for scratch and floating, what additives he used in the mix and how he prepped the area? With this info we might be able to...

plastering a wall - plaster or dry line

Float and set every time. I don't go with the thought that dry lining is quicker especially when only one wall is being done. ! 1 day to float and set a wall pucker job. 1 day to dry line wall by time you've taped and jointed and sanded - ok job! Only difference is that anyone can dryline...
