    rainwater recapture

Remember to be a little generous in your calcs for storage volume, just in case you go a while without rain. Remember you save twice with rainwater harvesting as the water company charges you for using water and for disposing of (nearly) the same volume through the sewer. Water you don't take...

    rainwater recapture

I'm looking into rainwater harvesting for our house. It's only a 2-bed terrace and we don't use a huge amount of water, however it's down to what you spend on materials that makes it worthwhile or not. You need to accurately calculate how much water you think you're going to use for flushing...

    Spur through a dividing wall?

Thanks ColJack. Living room box is also new ie. not yet fitted, so no danger of damage. I first thought the single could just be on the main ring but I think a spur will be easier to wire through the back of the double box,as it were.

    Spur through a dividing wall?

We have a double socket on the living room side of a dividing wall to the hall. Is it allowable to install a spur through the wall to put a single socket on the other side directly opposite the double? The wall is two bricks thick plus plaster, boxes are 25mm. Seems daft to bury cable to the...

    Cable routing advice

Agree with that. I have had an electrician, albeit one I won't be using as he seems very expensive (see other thread), tell me that what I have done and will be doing is neither here nor there as it's only what he would be doing anyway, and this is the basis i'm working on. Anything I suspect...

    Cable routing advice

No that's fair enough, I wasn't obvious. I think I didn't explain it fully because I have another thread running concurrently explaining everything. Right to bring it up though should I not have known any better. I'm hardly dictating to an electrician...

    Cable routing advice

[/url] Never said I was doing it myself, and I'm not. I'm cutting all chases, sinking boxes, lifting floor boards etc and getting a sparky in to do all the cabling.

what do you do to get walls surface even after taking paper

I used lining paper followed by B&Q's own brand of Polycell's Basecoat. It's designed to cover hairline cracks so will cover over joins between runs of paper. With emulsion on top they're invisible.

    Cable capping

Other quotes are scheduled to be done. I had no idea if this quote was the sort of price I was really looking at, as I was initially expecting it to be much less. If others agree it is too high, I know I should be expecting to be quoted lower, so I know where I stand in that respect.

    Cable routing advice

Yes, that's right. Surface mounted under the worktop, and the cable is then buried where it turns vertical to run behind the tiling above the worktop. The run is therefore vertical to the accessory. There will be a 90degree change of direction in the middle of the wall where there's no...

    Cable routing advice

Hello again, I have a query about a proposed cable run through our kitchen. A new electric oven (3.8kW) was installed by the previous owner, the feed for which was surface mounted in trunking back to the CU by the front door. To reduce damage and the need to replaster we're not bothered...

    Cable capping

Hopefully I've thought of everything, list below. No finishing is required. All chases and socket recesses will be cut by me. The house is not being lived in, it's not empty but furniture is already piled out of the way so floorboards can be lifted. Kitchen is out. I can supply parts but not...

    Cable capping

I'm not necessarily looking to prevent having RCDs on circuits, as surely they are a good thing to have? I imagine this wiring will be good for the duration of our ownership so I could just clip them in and plaster over, but for all it costs, oval conduit might not be a bad idea. Yes...

    Cable capping

Do you mean metal or plastic? What do you advise should be done, John?

    Cable capping

Thanks Steve. That's what I thought. I'm not recutting the chases if I don't really need capping. Anything I can do to cut the cost is welcome, as the price was over £3k for a 2-bed terrace. The house is empty and all chasing and socket sinking will be done by me, as will all the plastering...

    Cable capping

We're in the process of getting quotes done for a house rewire. I was told today that capping is required for all cables in walls that are buried less than 50mm. Is this correct? I was previously under the impression that if RCBO protection was installed then capping wasn't necessary. I've cut...

Loft conversion and fire regulations for protected stairway.

If you have or are having a loft conversion all doors onto the protected stairway must be fire doors with 20mins protection. You must be able to get from loft to final exit (usually the front door) as if the stairway was a sealed passageway.

    Fire doors and fireproofing products.

It pains me when I read things like 'some are and some are not'. Surely it either complies or it doesn't!? However, I will also contact BC to see what they have to say. If anyone else has any ideas please do tell.

    Fire doors and fireproofing products.

Is it possible to achieve the required 20mins of fire protection with a 35mm modern, moulded, hollow/honeycomb door painted with an intumescent paint or similar product? (Frame strips would be used as well, of course.) All I can find on Google relates to conserving solid wooden doors with...
