smallest pinhole leak in the world?

The flat below ours has developed a patch on the wall that is showing signs of water damage. The building was probably built in 1830ish. The patch starts at the base of the wall and is no more than 20 centimeters in width and spreads up the wall a bit for about 20 centi metres. There is...

3KW cooker on dedicated 45 amp circuit.

Does replacing the 45 amp fuse with an mcb require any actual rewiring at the consumer unit or is it a case of unplugging the existing fues unscrewing the base and putting in the new one. What I am trying to ask is do I need to connect the cable to the new mcb itself or is that done...

3KW cooker on dedicated 45 amp circuit.

I have rewireables as in the pictures on the left and one standard 45amp carrier on the right seperate from the others. Is that because you can't get 45amp fuse wire?

3KW cooker on dedicated 45 amp circuit.

No other overcurrent protectoin between oven and consumer unit. It is connected to the cable coming from the consumer unit via a junction box. The consumer unit is one with fusse that require fuse wire to be put in them. They are placed in removable plugs. The oven one is on the far...

3KW cooker on dedicated 45 amp circuit.

I have an electric oven that runs on its own circuit. My hob is gas. The oven is rated at 2800 watts. The circuit is protected by one 45amp wired fuse in the consumer unit. Is it a problem that the fuse would appear to be too high for the oven? Previous posts suggest an oven with...

    light fitting in bathroom

It is one of those with a battery tester. Just went into Ryness at lunch to ask about multimeters. When asked for a bit of advice about how they are used I was told.... "Well, it's all trial and error really. Just keep trying stuff until you get what you want" Not the kind of advice...

    dry rot

I have been told there is a smell that can be a giveaway there is dry rot present. Can anybody describe the smell. I have been musty but not sure what that means. Does musty mean it smells like a wet towel that has been left wet and in the cold for a few months. There is a smell in my...

two t&E cables running into light switches.

Sorry to have to ask for clarification here but I am pretty pedantic when it comes to electricity. Is Comms suggestion definitely wrong. As you know there are some pretty wierd things in my flat. Andrew2022 Can you clarify that you mean ignore Comms post. Thanks for your help.

two t&E cables running into light switches.

Well two switches definitely are. I was considering putting the unused black wires into what I think are called choc blocks and then taping them up. Does that sound a bit safer? Obviously I can only assume that they are not connected to anything in the junction box as I don't have access to...

two t&E cables running into light switches.

Finding problems in my bathroom has led me to start investigating the electrics in the rest of my house. Each light switch has two cables running into it. Each cable is t&e. There are earth cables this time (phew!) and they are both connected to the metal case and are linked together...

    light fitting in bathroom

Have to say I have always found this neone screwdriver rather baffling. if I put my finger on the non- tip end then with my other hand holding a paper clip touch the tip to the paper clip then it lights. I presumed that that was telling me that ther was a complete circuit there. Now if I...

    light fitting in bathroom

I am assuming that some if not all of you of you are professional electricians. Wish I had a job that I enjoyed talking about after work. From the isolator switch in my bathroom there is a t&E cable that links to the shaver socket. the tc&E also comes into the shaver socket and is linked to...

    light fitting in bathroom

Thanks Andrew Can you confirm the wiring from the diagram I have drawn. What is the MET? At the light, do you mean attaching the live wire to the multimeter and then the other end to the earth?

    light fitting in bathroom

The cable from the light to the switch runs up into the ceiling and emerges at the switch about a metre away. The room is an extension and I do not have access to the void above the ceiling and do not know how I would go about threading the cable through. Am I being an idiot, and is there an...

    light fitting in bathroom

Changing the cable from the light to the pull cord is going to be close to impossible. Would actually be preferable to lose the timer function on the fan instead of changing the cable. Is that possible and if so, how would I have to wire it? Would it then be considered a safe installation?

    Mice Smell

Smell is kind of urine like though could this be rot? Can anybody describe what a rot smell would be like? I assumed kind of like a damp towel that has been left in a cold place for too long.
