    Question to Bricklayers

I'm about to use 73mm bricks (a kind of Imperial/Metric hybrid) for an extension on a pre 1960s house. The blocks will be standard Metric (i.e. 440x215x100mm Which as you know equates to 3x2 metric bricks (215x65x102.5mm )+10mm joints). I was wondering how you place the walls ties so...

Moving Gas Meter with limited space to move to!

That's fine once the wall is built. But how do Transco mount the meter when no wall is built yet? I can't build the wall until the meter has been moved! Catch 22. I can see I gonna have BIG probs with this one!

Moving Gas Meter with limited space to move to!

Yes, £400 to move the meter is about what I expected, plus £100 to reconnect the supply to the house. Does there HAVE to be a wall to mount the semi-concealed (in ground) meter box to? As I have a catch 22 situation, I can't build the wall until I've moved the meter. But if the meter has...

    Plastering

I went on a 5 day bricklaying course (which was excellent). They also had a Plastering course running at the same time so I had a look at the work the guys were doing. It was very good and most had never done it before. They (the students) recommended I take the course when ready. This is...

Moving Gas Meter with limited space to move to!

Here is a very rough artist impression I've made to show the location of the meter. FRONT ELEVATION (The new looking brickwork at front will be the new extension!) The Meter is located in the bottom right corner flush with the existing house. Not visible on picture but you can see how the...

Hapless diy and b and q.

Try going to my local Plumb Center, the woman behind the counter didn't know what a compression joint was!. I think B&Q do an excellent job and agree with breezer, it's the incompetence of people buying it that's at fault.

Moving Gas Meter with limited space to move to!

I am to build an extension early next year and I'm currently sorting the ground work and utillities. The current plans have a wall running through the middle of my gas meter. So the meter has to be moved, changing the plan at this stage is not an option. I have a semi-buried meter box...

    siting a compost bin

I put several layers of chicken wire on top of each other under my bin as I did get rats in it. They love old sweet corn cobs :x I'd keep it as far away from the house as possible as I got loads of fruit flies in mine. My trouble with compost bins is I can never fill it fast enough to...

    back filling

Make sure ground (gravel) level is at least 6" (2 courses) below the DPC where it touches the wall and you should be fine.

    Corner profiles

I was looking at a Blakes Corner profile (e.g. http://www.goldtrowel.org/brickprofile.htm ) for use with line work in bricklaying. Are there altenatives, if so I'd be interested to know if anyone has a preference.
