5 Day Bricklaying courses, anyone been on one?

Yes (and it would appear I took no notice! but I know where I went wrong). If you look closely at the 1st course you will see a queen closer. The 2nd course should have had the two parallel strecher bricks inset into the pier. The wall was generally one big cock up, so in the end I...

5 Day Bricklaying courses, anyone been on one?

Too late, the whole thing was torn down shortly after this picture was taken in preparation for our pier and flemmish bond wall. (In the end I concentrated on the pier and left the wall) Piers are good practice for plumb, level and square. I managed to keep the diagonals the same (620mm)...

5 Day Bricklaying courses, anyone been on one?

Like I said I need lots more practice, if I was paying someone to build what I did I'd tell them to start again. The 3/4 bats in the middle was a silly lack of concentration at the end of a day of hard graft! I learned a lot by my mistakes, if I was to build the wall now it would be a lot...

5 Day Bricklaying courses, anyone been on one?

Hi Chaps, Recently finished my "House Construction" bricklaying course with www.tradeskills4u.co.uk near Gatwick. I had a great time and was able to construct a small 'dwelling' with cavity wall+insulation, window and Catnic lintel. The image below shows I'll need a LOT more practice but...

What is minimum depth for water, gas, electric pipes/cables?

Thanks Just found out from an Old-timer in the village that it was a disreputable local builder who modernised all the drains and pipework on the street in the early 1970s. The council never asked them to do work for them again.

What is minimum depth for water, gas, electric pipes/cables?

The electricity supply to the garage is fed via an RCD so hopefuly if there was a problem the power would shut off before too much harm. Thanks

Connecting old to new water main

The Pipe has BS-1972 which is followed by an inverted triangle with a squiggle in it followed by Class C. I'll take a trip to a one of the companies you mention with the pipe. Cheers

Connecting old to new water main

I'm a bit confused :? I've just had the digital calipers on my black pipe and measure 21.5mm od and 15.5mm id. Why am I confused? 1/2"=12.7mm not 15.5mm or do imperial measurments for pipework use the internal rather than external diameter for the gauge? Anyway I've had look at the...

Connecting old to new water main

I'd like to connect an old black Alkathene water main (22mm or 7/8" od) to MPDE blue pipe (od 25mm). I went to Plumb Centre and they told me they don't make connectors! (I know they do as I've seen the Water board use them). So how do I connect them?

    Newby Extension Question

Probably. £1000 per square metre is a rough ballpark figure, more if you're in the southeast. Don't forget to read forum rule 9a, even in some cases it's a tad draconian.

    Victorian basement: lowering brick floor

Oh alright MAY be the footings, Mr Clevercloggs! Before the concrete footings became common place 1920s onward, brick footings such as those described were very common. My mother-in-laws are just like it.

    Victorian basement: lowering brick floor

DONT'T remove the stepped bricks! They are the footings for the house. My mother-in-law's neighbour did as you are proposing and caused subsidence in her house. (Her's is a victorian terrace)
