Ground moving like a water bed help"!"

Sounds like liquefaction, possibly due to the vibration of the digger. :?:

What is minimum depth for water, gas, electric pipes/cables?

As a matter of interest, can electric cable and water pipes be laid together in the same trench? I see no reason why not assuming relevant warning tape is used and perhaps covering the pipe with something like old clay tiles as an added precaution. Reason: My electric cable that runs to the...

What is minimum depth for water, gas, electric pipes/cables?

The water main runs parallel to the garden path and is approximately 8" lower than the path. No landscaping has been done. As far as I know the main was relaid in the 1970s The water board said they would charge to fix my pipe (though all it needed was a compression joint). Luckily...

What is minimum depth for water, gas, electric pipes/cables?

Thanks! I can't belieive the person who dug only 8" to lay a water pipe! n What makes it worse is the stop cock in the street is ceased open so Balfour Beatty are coming to dig up the road. In the mean time my lawn is getting a healthy drink.

What is minimum depth for water, gas, electric pipes/cables?

I've just been digging over my garden and stuck a spade into my 1" water main. It was only 8" under the ground or about a spades length! Please does anyone know the minimum depth for gas, water and electric?

    Cost of re-pointing a wall

I still see nothing wrong in asking for a ball park min/max approximate figure. When I decided to get an extension built I had NO idea how much per square metre it would cost. It could have been £100 or even £4000! So asking the question gave a me a very good idea how big I could build. I...

My neighbour just happens to be having their house done. He's charging £10/m2

    Cost of re-pointing a wall

I don't see anything wrong with asking ball park figures IMHO. The problem with rule number 9 is sometime you can get into a catch 22 situation. For example I wanted to build an extension to my house as big as I could afford. But I couldn't get builders to quote until I'd drawn plans...

Source of good quality self install uPVC windows?

I am in the process of finding a company who supplies good quality uPVC (light oak style) windows that can be installed by the customer. My local authority charges just under £60 (for up to 12 windows) for the necessary Building Regulations approval. The only company I'm know who supply self...

    cracks in plaster

Are cracks in plaster more common on drywalling? The reason I ask is the walls in a friends' new house has plaster flaking off where the clout nails are. I'm still contemplating what method of plastering to use for my extension i.e. drywalling or traditional plastering.

Purchasing a good quality Spirit Level?

I want to buy good quality spirit levels spec: 0.5mm/metre or better, lengths 1800, 1000, 600mm. Preferable one where the bubble is tight between the lines and not like my current one which is 2-3mm both sides at least. Please can anyone recommend a brand? Thanks.

    Self build.......

I found these books useful. First one shows the "Nuts & Bolts" of house building albeit for an extension (it's not comprehensive by any means but it's a good start). "Home Extensions: Planning, Managing and Completing Your Extension"...

My existing floorboards are approx. 3'3" 1000mm above a concrete skim. I'm thinking of having approx 800mm depth on my extension What are the straps you speak of, should I get them for my exisiting floor? Hey Bascoat, have you got any plans or photos of your project so far? My PP & BR...

Is this buildable, jbonding & tawelfryn?

A house up the street used soldiers which look ready made that size (i.e. 2 courses). Here's the new and improved design (Door for effect only), I wonder if Planning will say anything? I'll email it to my architect and see what he has to say. Yes, it is quite effective. It...

    re-pointing... prep tips please.

A couple of houses on my street have just been repointed by professional companies. First one used what looked like a wall chaser connected to a vacuum cleaner to collect the dust and did everything off a ladder. The other used a bog std 4" angle grinder and created considerable dust...

Is this buildable, jbonding & tawelfryn?

You guys have got me really thinking that the original design of the extension is suspect. Click image to see how the design will look, these are the actual bricks I'll use: Even if I make a perfect job of bricklaying as per plan it might still look a b***er.

Is this buildable, jbonding & tawelfryn?

Click on image to enlarge: Looking at the existing house gives clues as to why the architect did what he did. Notice the soldiers above the window are 2 courses high and not the usual 3. Top of door is lower than window.

Is this buildable, jbonding & tawelfryn?

I thought so. The same architect drew the extension plans for a neighbour he made their door 900mm. How much design change do the planning office allow? I'd have a thought the odd 20mm here or there is negligible. I think my modified design makes more sense. Click on image below...
