Help!!! trying to put floating units up and it keeps falling

I take comfort in the fact that unless I feel an idiot during the DIY I can't be learning anything :) ;)

3D design software - any recommendations?

Tried a number of those types of application. Never that pleased with any - make sure you try before you buy. Maybe it's just me, but I always seem to go back to paper, pencil, scissors, etc..

:D That are these new fangled things called "links", you click on them using your mouse and another page opens

Halogen - Spot Lights not working

Putting higher wattage bulbs in not only increases the current, it also generates more heat. Could be a number of things. Check that the bulbs don't need replacing. Check if any voltage is getting to the light fittings when the switch is on. If there's not, check that there's no fuses /...

    Light switch problems

Ok, judging from what you said , I'd hazard another guess (and stress that's all it is). Could be that some bright spark has opted to feed the mains in to each switch, and then run cable to the light from there. If that were so then the way you connected (putting the switch in one line...

    Intermediate switch.

That problem sound familiar :) 2 possible solutions a) re-route the cables so that the intermediates aren't in the block of 3 but the 'normal' ones are. b) If you've the space, install multiple single gang ones, rather than a single 3 gang one.

Help required re new sockets and light switch plates etc.

If you are rewiring the kitchen anyway, how much additional cost would it be to replace the existing lighting circuits elsewhere with an earthed one ? think that'd be my first thought.

    Lighting Circuit

I believe the problem was, from which point are the cables dangling from the ceiling. But I think we can assume from the point where your light fitting is/was. In which case there is something wrong with the way the circuit was wired. Have a check with the diagrams in the sticky thread...

    Light switch problems

2 red and 2 black sounds like 2 cables to me. But only 1 earth ? Someone hasn't sniped another earth wire back so far you can't see it have they ? Or are the 2 earth joined and going down the one green/yellow sleeving ? The arrangement sounds so unusual I think folk may be reluctant to...

    Dual switch hall light circuit!

You don't get 240v where ? At the switch, or the light bulb ? Assuming 240v at switch but not the lamp, it suggests to me that the final leg of the circuit, from switch to rose (or junction box) to lamp may have a break. (The black or blue wire hopefully covered on each end with red or...

    Boiler Cabling

Interesting. At the risk of attracting a lot of flak, I think all this is an unwarranted intrusion into what individuals can do in their own home. Appreciate some of the stuff I've discovered in the past really ought to have been prevented, but it was still my moral responsibility to get it...

    One switch for ALL lights

My understanding of your requirement is that you want to be able to turn on and off the various lights separately, as normal, but have some kind of master switch to ensure all is off at once. Sure you could set something up to remove the power from everywhere at once, but then, next time you...

    Phase

Best of luck with your invention, even if I am a little skeptical. In answer to your question, the generator generates 3 phrases. Being AC (alternating current) the 'voltages' on each reach a maximum at slightly different times to each other, thus they are different phases. Generally...

    Boiler Cabling

Obviously, and if there's anything I've missed I'll await the Amazon book recommendation  Thanks for that. I'll check tonight, but I believe there is already a connection unit in the 'utility room'. It is the flex from it, to wherever it is picking up the mains (it seems probable...

    Boiler Cabling

Sorry if I used an inappropriate term. It runs the central heating. I called it a heater as it heats the water, but it's the main boiler for the central heating. Has, as I recall, a couple of pipes coming out of the top which must be the feed and return, which supplies the heat to both...

    Boiler Cabling

Gosh that was quick. I'd need to be back home if you want details but it is a gas boiler that runs the central heating and also heats the water in the hot tank upstairs.

    Boiler Cabling

Hopefully a simple subject. I'm redoing the kitchen, and part of the job has turned out to be a need to move the sockets etc. so that they don't end up behind the new tall units etc.. Besides they were always a little low on the wall having cut into the 'splash backs' (?) above the worktops...
