    Landis and Gyr Meter E110

I have just had a new connection by the DNO and they supplied one of these: http://www.test-meter.co.uk/landis-and-gyr-e110-electricity-meter/ There are two lights, currently just the one on the right is one permanently and it is RED. I have yet to get the CU connected, but I was...

    Roof ventilation

I am re-slating a roof that once simply had wired glass, and am thinking about the ventilation. Is it normal to leave a sufficient gap at the top and the side of the slating for ventilation as it meets the wall (below the lead flashing) (in conjunction with eave vents), or should I have...

slate size for small lean to

Main dwelling has 600 x 300 slates and also tiles. You cannot see the main dwelling slates only the tiles above. Pitch isn't an issue. I was thinking you should use smaller slates (e.g. 250 x 500) for a smaller roof, given the choice, but perhaps not?

    Fire Alarm Test Certificate

Ok - thanks, I'll take a look. A further question - if fitting an alarm to a lock-up shop (there is a flat upstairs with no common areas - i.e. both shop and flat have separate entrance), is there a requirement to link the shop alarm to the flat upstairs?, or does this apply if there is common...

    Fire Alarm Test Certificate

I have just bought a shop, and the wiring is quite old, so it will probably need a re-wire. To what extend is it a requirement to provide Fire Alarms in the shop (they don't currently exist!).

    Joist size please??

I have an arium (or lean-to), which contains glass, and I want to replace with slates and a velux (0.55m x.78m). Essentially I have a triangle, the horizontal bit is 1.25m, the upright bit is 0.8m, and the longest diagonal is 1.5m. So the joist lengths will be 1.25m and the "rafters" will be...

    Driving rain on brick wall?

A final question if anyone knows the answer? When my problem occured with damp patches on the plasterboard, it coincided with me taking three windows out in the flat and it raining. I mistakingly thought it was rain getting in, but thanks to you guys, I am pretty sure it is what you call...

    Driving rain on brick wall?

OK - your thoughts about ripping off the plasterboard, putting up some battens and insulating between the board and the brick? Or will there still be an issue where the board meets the batten (will this still be a cold spot). 1. I have checked in the attic and the inner bricks are very dry -...

    Driving rain on brick wall?

Thanks - I understand what you say about the condensation, but what about therendered/plastered wall which is exhibiting the same issue with more "random" damp paches appearing?

    Driving rain on brick wall?

Thanks Catlad - but I have an update! So started at 5:30am today to do as much raking out and pointing before the rain was due to set in at noon. Along the way, one of the outside bricks was very loose as most of the mortar was shot, so it need coming out anyway to re-set. Low and behold, I...

    Driving rain on brick wall?

Yes I am pretty sure about that, as it only happened when it started to raint. Also sash windows are currently out and being painted and there is no heating as it's currently being refurbished. However, today, I examined the pointing, which appeared to be good, as the brick and mortar had...

    Driving rain on brick wall?

Cavity - both walls are brick. The brick is already painted, not rendered. Paint straight onto brick, so not going to strip back fully, and will have to repaint. I suspect entry is between gable and roof. I will be investigating this and repairing if necessary. But I wanted to know if...

    Driving rain on brick wall?

Just finished dot and dab straight onto a brick wall (plaster was removed) wall didn't seem damp when I put up thew plasterboards, but now I can see patches (where the plasterboard adhesive is), as a result of last night's and today's rain. The wall is gable end, first floor. The outside...

Thank you. Can the joists be butted up against the ledger, or do they have to be notched in?

    "Light Duty" joist hanger?

I am creating a new ceiling using 6" joists. I am looking for timber to timber joist hangers, and found this : http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Construction+Materials/Builders+Metalwork/Light+Duty+Joist+Hanger+47mm/d210/sd2797/p43424 The joists will only be taking the weight of two layers...
