    Canal-side Subsidence

Yes. We moved in in Oct and prior to that two boats totalling 42ft were moored here. So hopefully they were the issue and hopefully our repair will last a good 10 years or so.

    Canal-side Subsidence

Hi, Well i just used my trusty pointed metal bar to do some soundings. If i push the metal bar into the water next to the mooring it sinks about 1.5 feet before encountering mud. I can then push it into the mud for about 4 feet (the length of the bar). Removing the bar causes bubbles. At some...

    Removing a Random Mini Wall

Hi, As you can see from the below pictures, where my gas flue exits the house there is a random section of brick work that seemingly does nothing useful – as far as I can tell. The rectangle of brickwork does however collect rainwater when it rains heavily and holds it against the house. As...

    Terracing a Garden

Thanks, I had not considered that, as I never really new it existed. I am slowly learning!

    Wet, Yellow, Smelly

That would make sense. Having explored all the lofts, only 1 of these has a tank which seems to be plastic. So perhaps I need to remove all of the insulation and look inside!

    Terracing a Garden

What do you intend to fill the gabions with? I was looking at 1m x 1m x 0.5m gabions and came to the conclusion that for one run of my terrace I would need circa 10 gabions, and 5 bags of Gabion stone. The gabions are £20 each (£100) and the stone £70 a bag (£350) so it seemed rather expensive...

    Terracing a Garden

I could do if I had a boat. At the moment it is all done by band up and down the stairs!

    Wet, Yellow, Smelly

No sure if we have a storage cistern. There is a plastic tank in the loft and two hot water cylinders in the airing cupboard (both of which look new-ish). It is only the cold water that seems affected and the sinks and toilets that produce yellow water mostly don't have flexible pipes. As...

    Terracing a Garden

10m is the length that one section of the terrace. Access is terrible, it is through a gated entrance (doorway size) and then down narrow steps by about 4 m! Would concrete gravel boards work as a cheaper solution?

    Wet, Yellow, Smelly

Hi All, My house has a number of bathrooms and toilets (it was once a B&B). Some of the sinks and toilets in the property produce water that is tinged yellow and has a metallic smell to it. Conversely other sinks and toilets are absolutely fine, with the water being clear and non-smelly. If it...

UPVC Windows - Who to Avoid?

Hi all, I live in Wiltshire and will soon be in the market for some new UPVC windows (around 20 of the blighters). I was wondering if there was any wisdom on the forum with regards to any companies than can be trusted and any that should be avoided at all costs! So before I take the plunge...

    Terracing a Garden

Hi, I am looking to create some terraces in a very steep patch of land. The terraces will be circa 10m long and will need to be 80cm to 1m high. So they will beholding back a good weight of soil. I am looking to create around 4 such terraces (so a lot of materials). So far the only options...

    Canal-side Subsidence

Hi, Thanks for the advice. I suspect that you are correct that the bridge is the cause of the wash! I will indeed try to measure the waters depth by the mooring out of interest. I think the previous owner said that there was a step just below the water line somewhere, so perhaps it is not that...

    Canal-side Subsidence

The line is that the contract states that we accept the land in the condition in which it is in and that they are not responsible for repairs. Which I can see, given that the rent is so low. Being reasonable, if I was expecting them to maintain the land I would expect to pay a lot lot more.

Frank, many thanks for the advice. I think I will be using this method in some other places!!

    Canal-side Subsidence

Over the weekend I started the repair work, following the C&RT's advised approach. I dug out about 2 tonnes of soil and random hardcore to expose the areas that had been undermined. The trenches were lined with a mixture of hardcore and stone to create a base layer in the mud, with some...

    Canal-side Subsidence

Hi, I am presuming that the material won't just disappear into the canal as the mooring is bounded by some form of Aluminum roofing sheets that go into the water and are held in place by sunk scaffold poles. Clearly I don't know how deep these roofing sheets go. I will have to Google...

    Canal-side Subsidence

Hi Ken, Thanks for your comments. I totally agree with them in the case of a rented house! In this case however, the Canal Owner (the Canal and River Trust) won’t repair the land under the terms of the contract, as it is specifically excluded. The annual rent is a token rent (£150) and...

    Canal-side Subsidence

Hi, Who do yo suggest I seek further advice from? I am not sure who to contact apart from the Canal and River Trust. Thanks

    Canal-side Subsidence

Well I finally got a visit from the Canal and River Trust. They won't repair the area, but advised me how to do so. The plan is: - Dig out the existing material/mud along the length of the mooring to just under the water line - Insert a layer of 75mm to 150mm cleaned stone (rip-wrap). These...
