    MCB and RCD in garage

OK the inline RCD sounds preferable, as it woud protect all the sockets, rather than being one per socket. Where in the circuit does it go? I assume between the MCB and sockets? Can anyone recommend a good one?

    Which combi boiler?

OK an ATAG series E sounds good, would 32kW be enough for a 3 bedroom house?

    MCB and RCD in garage

I'm planning to run electricity to my garage and have been speaking to an electrician about it today. I just want to confirm my understanding of what I've been told and also think about the most cost effective way of doing it. I've been told I need a MCB circuit breaker and also a seperate...

    Which combi boiler?

I know this is a very open ended question (and perhaps one that has been asked quite frequently).....but could anyone recommend a good combi boiler suitable for a 3 bedroom house. There are a total of 8 radiators to heat. There's a bewildering choice on the market and I'm just a bit...

    SWA Armoured Cable Thickness

Thank you for that, 4mm cable sounds sensible. At least now I know roughly what I'm talking about when I speak to a pro! One more question, would 6mm cable be overkill? Thanks, Nick

    SWA Armoured Cable Thickness

Well I will need to notify it, before I actually get around to doing it. I'm still in the early planning/costing stages... The cable will be running in the ground, underneath the patio. There is no adjacent pipework along that section of ground. There's also no exposed metalwork in the...

    SWA Armoured Cable Thickness

Hi, I need to run some SWA cable from a domestic consumer unit to a garage about 10 meters away and am wondering thickness of cable I would need. The consumer unit in the garage is a 2 way MCB unit and runs a 32A and an 10A output. It will run a couple of sockets and some overhead...

Bathroom shaver socket dry wall box problem

I think I'm going to have to hunt around tomorrow. Many thanks!!

Bathroom shaver socket dry wall box problem

I think that either of those will just about do it. Any ideas where I can get one on the high street, rather than waiting for internet delivery. The reason I need it now is because the box ideally has to go in before the tiling starts on Saturday. Otherwise it's going to be an ultra messy...

Bathroom shaver socket dry wall box problem

Hi, I want to install a shaver socket in the bathroom, but have hit a bit of a snag due to the transformer at the back of the shaver socket sticking out too much to fit in the dry wall box I have got. The box is 34mm deep and the transformer sticks out about 50mm. Is it possible to buy...

    Socket switch makes popping noise

Ah yes, a cheap internet brand. Please see www.mrsocket.com They look nice enough, but I cannot vouch for the quality of the internal components.

    Socket switch makes popping noise

Yes, it's definately a popping noise. So is that normal? I don't plan to be switching stuff off under load very often, it was just an off-chance that I had the wallpaper machine plugged in.

    Socket switch makes popping noise

I've fitted some new stainless steel double sockets in my kitchen and just yeserday I had a high wattage wallpaper stripping steam machine plugged in. The machine has no on/off switch, so needs to be controlled by the switch on the socket. When I flicked the switch to off, it made a loud-ish...

    Elecricity Socket Probem

Right, I've earthed everything. It all looks good. Feeling a bit safer now..... Many thanks for your help, I may well have been fried without you. Now I need to check the rest of the sockets in the house, oh there's only about 30 of them! :D

    Elecricity Socket Probem

I see the point. OK I'll do it tomorrow. Can I use 1mm wire, or shall I go and get 1.5mm wire to be extra safe?

    Elecricity Socket Probem

So I don't need to do it? But I should just to be extra safe?

    Elecricity Socket Probem

Thank you for all your help, it's very much appreciated. What's the worse that can happen if the plate isn't earthed? I've found some wire I can do this with, but it looks like 1mm, rather than 1.5mm. Is that going to be up to the job, or should I go and get some 1.5mm wire tomorrow?

    Elecricity Socket Probem

I think it is a spur. There are two conductors (two L, two N), but the earths merge into one wire, very strange that... So you are saying I need a 1.5mm wire from the socket to the metal back box to earth it? I take it the same would apply to a lightswitch with a steel facia?

    Elecricity Socket Probem

Yeah I was thinking of thru crimps as a last resort, but don't know it was acceptable to put them in mains wiring. I'd earth the socket in the usual way, with the yellow/green earth wire. Do I need to do any more than that on account of the metal front plate? The sockets have 2 earth...

    Elecricity Socket Probem

I'm trying to replace an old double socket with a nice stainless steel one, but the L and N terminals on the new socket are on the opposite ends to the old socket and the wires won't reach. What can I do to get around this problem? I can't take the socket back unfortunately. Any help...
