Many, many failing lintels from my 1895 semi..

Much appreciated! That's solved a whole lot of measuring! Bookmarked... Arch Radius 1114 Arch Sweep Angle 34.5° Arch Spring Angle 72.8° Unit Bottom Width 51 Unit Top Width 63 Units 11 On the topic of mortar, I plan to use that from Limebase, which I think looks to contain a pozzolanic...

Many, many failing lintels from my 1895 semi..

Right. Does the slow carbonation of the mortar not exposed to atmosphere just mean a very slow cure sufficient to be self supporting? It won't be occupied for a few months so that would not be a problem. Fair point well made though, I can consider NHL now at least thanks. For the sake of a...

Many, many failing lintels from my 1895 semi..

Gotcha!! Voussoirs! Thank you, now I can find all the tutorials with the correct keyword!!! Understood no straps required. So the bricks ARE supposed to be all evenly cut.. Cue many Youtube tutorials to watch this evening... BTW I'm only assuming the inner lintels are timber and I'll replace...

Many, many failing lintels from my 1895 semi..

Hello, This is my next project, as you can see every single lintel is forked.. I would like to acro above each, remove the loose bricks, and rebuild, with an appropriate lime render, happy to do things the hard way, cutting bricks into tapers to make a nice strong arch for an original fix...

    Skirting board questions...

Hello Sorry for digging up an old thread. On fixing batons to the bricks for fixing the skirting, can I ask would I be wise using strips of DPM behind those batons? It's above the original dpm but I think it very good practice to be conscious of avoiding bridging. By the same token, leaving...

Fixing air bricks into Victorian masonry Q

Good point!! I'll have to get my colour match game on. Thanks, and rest assured those hideous triangles of flashing will be the first to go.. Probably with a few more queries... I think the lintel is high and it needs a catnic installed in line with the bottom of the bay roof, with some clever...

    Old Cottage/Smaller Door Options Query

Worth a thought have you considered sourcing a reclaimed oak door and having a joiner adjust the size to suit your opening? Obviously subject to finding one with dimensions near enough so as to not look wonky when cut down.. e.g...

    Installing Air Bricks Problem

Yep.. Good PPE and a beer helps I find.. Basically fitting air bricks front and back of a building are the best design as the pressure differential is greatest then (eg wind blowing across)

Fixing air bricks into Victorian masonry Q

Hello I need to fix about half a dozen air bricks into my new (to me) 1895 semi, I'll be using either new or reclaimed clay type, or, if I'm feeling really fancy then perhaps some decorative cast type, all good so far. My concern is should I use lime mortar to fix these to match the existing...

    Installing Air Bricks Problem

Would chopping trenches into the concrete extension be feasible? So air bricks front & rear with a clear path through? 110mm PVC waste pipe is used to duct the air from the air bricks to far reaches of the sub floor in other instances, and these can be used to duct through the concrete trench...

"New" fibreglass shed flat roof already leaking within 3 months

Long shot but is there any mileage in jacking each joist in turn at the hanger and fitting packers just enough to cause a fall to one corner. Come to think of it, there is no drain gulley or gutter?

Replacement windows: are prices low now?

I was hoping someone there would be a decent supplier in terms of quality in this thread.. 'Who supplies the best sash windows' in google just lists suppliers with the most ads..

Is position of new window ok?

You'll probably find if you measure your walls they are not square, and the windows are. So the uneven gaps you see will be the square (parallel) window in a not to parallel opening. Sometimes expanding foam is not used, or used sparingly because it can push the flexible upvc frames out of...
