    40 Amp rated Meter and higher rated fuse is apparently a permitted thing by electricity board ... we rang up several times in the past and they said its fine ...guess its really rated higher :?

    you could use RCD sockets yes, they are quite expensive and also the cable supplying the garage could do with RCD protection probably, and so could your house sockets ... dont know how far/expensive u want to go if u can find out cable size, and say what u plan to plug in the sockets then...

    supposed to have dedicated circuit now, but better fitted on lighting circuit than no smokes at all .... if u fit on lighting circuit they must have battery back-up shouldnt be on RCD side due to nuisance trips... but new regs most domestic properties will be 30mA on all circuits anyway...

    Do you have an RCD on the sockets in your house ? If you do and the garage is fed from the socket circuit in the house, then the garage lights and sockets will be RCD protected

    You should fuse the cable to the garage ... any idea what size the cable is ? easiest way to do this is put a fused spur connection unit which will be 13amp (can be less) but this can only be done if your cable is 2.5mm2 and if your load wont exceed 13amps

    if u call fire service then they come and install battery operated smoke detectors for free, and talk through fire escape routes, safety advice etc

    some do radio link now .... "Aico" is a brand name that do it http://www.aico.co.uk/smoke_160.htm http://www.aico.co.uk/smoke_radio.htm The bases are the radio part ... think its quite expensive and dont know how reliable the radio link is, since never used it

    ive also read that the disboards have to be at the 'new height' ... isnt disboard a type of switch/control ? and to me it makes sense (although my company dont do it) ...since what good is a light switch if u cant reach the MCB in the disboard thats tripped... if you have a cupboard...

    Consumer Unit Trips When Cutting Cable

    your 'fuse board' most probably has an RCD as the main switch. RCDs will trip if there is a Neutral-Earth fault (you cutting cable) Turning the lighting circuit off only disconnects the live (phase) conductor. not neutral

    if the cooker switch has 2 supplies to it, then thats quite bad .... if there is a fuse/MCB for the "Cooker" turn that off and see if the sockets work try pulling/turning off Socket circuits and see if the sockets will turn off with the cooker fuse in still two fuses supplying one point...
