    I have never used ptfe on a new fitting, but sometimes if a old one weeps when I redo it up I put a large smear of paste on it and sorted. But never PTFE. I go to jobs and see ptfe on them and think why ! The olive seals the joint not ptfe.

    we replace quite a lot of these and we never open them. They useally leak from the outlet connector on unit or from under the lid part on side. I would imaging it that if you opened it to clean the float sensor or whatever it would never seal right. Just keep using it till it leaks or packs up...

    I got a very nice looking bath mixer shower type off ebay for about £30 for my bath and works brill. It had no markings on it so it must of been some chinese inport but cant fault it. I would advise cange whole tap.

    I would just stick to brushes and a hover. At least you know all the crap is going to be gone in one go with brushes and you dont need to open and close the boiler many times with normal method.

    Have you tried to see if you have a spark it sounds like spark probes,ht leads or transformer. The photo cell only detects a flame to keep the oil on.
