How can I adjust my jigsaw cutting depth

How can I adjust my jigsaw cutting depth? Currently, I'm using progressor blades for wood cutting and they work fine only they are very long and they cut 50 or 60mm below the jigsaw "shoe". The reason I care is that I want to cut some of my floorboards along the mid-joist-line, but...

New sub floor question : one floorboard left

Many thanks for the guidance + replies. I will certainly leave the concealed floorboard alone and "butt up" - if you pardon the expression. I also promise to tidy up my wiring + secure neatly to joist sides etc under the new sub floor before laying it. I've also got some steel "joist...

New sub floor question : one floorboard left

Take a look at my floorboard photo. My project is to throw away my old creaky bedroom floorboards and replace with a new sub floor ( 18mm marine plywood in 4' x 8' sheets ). All the 'easy' floorboards are now up apart from the first floorboard shown. This board is below a window...

How do I remove old masking tape

Thank you painterman. I will use turps on the remaining problem tape. I have found by chance that cillit bang is pretty good at getting masking tape off windows but it does have an odd purple colouring so I will switch to turps .

How do I remove old masking tape

I forgot to remove some masking tape when I had a painter in a few months ago. The tape is now well and truly stuck and won't simply pull off without taking lumps of wallpaper / plaster with it.. How do I remove old masking tape from glass windows ? How do I remove old masking tape from...

    Plane or Saw the Door?

Before cutting/planing, I would prepare the door first by clamping long metal straps to each side of the door, near the bottom edge, inset an inch or so i.e. the clamped straps mark where you want the new bottom edge to be. Metal strap ...

Laying Solid Oak Directly On Joists - Possible?

If you are concerned about the 12mm / 15mm gap left around the edge of your room you can always consider filling the gap with some proprietary expanding, sound sealing material i.e. something like this http://www.soundreduction.co.uk/images/file/Soundseal%2005.pdf ( I have no connection...

    Flowerpots and downlighters

My neighbour below has had downlighters installed in his ceiling. I can see the light fittings in the floor void when I take up my floorboards. The fittings run very hot and I think they are letting noise come through as well. Q : Working between my joists, can I achieve sound proofing...

    Railway sleepers ?

I have noticed how it is possible to buy new or secondhand railway sleepers in oak, pine or beech for use in decking, walling or gardening projects. The dimensions of these sleepers at typically 200mm x 125mm x 2 meters are ideal for my joist replacement / sistering project. Has anyone had...

    Rotten joists shared with neighbour!

I'm not qualified to offer an opinion but will anyway... As it's the ground floor joists that are rotten you might be able to build a support 'sleeper' brick wall say three feet high, with damp membrane, under/as part of the foundations to support the joists at the mid point. With this...

    Joist sistering without coach bolts

Got it. I'm planning on using big coach screws, say M16 x 200mm But these big screws might split the joist as I wrench them in. As a precaution, should I drill 10mm pilot holes first to take the M16 screws ?

    Joist sistering without coach bolts

Thank you for your guidance. 600 centres + staggered 1/3rd instead of centre line = can & will do. Alternating point and head sides is a problem for me. The stud partition hanging above the joist gap is so wide that it acts as a "mini- ceiling" above the joists. I don't have access to...

    Joist sistering without coach bolts

I want to attach timber to the side of my existing joists to make them wider. My existing joist width is ~80mm and I want to double this with to approx 160mm. The new structure will need to support a heavy Victorian lath/plaster stud partition. The partition runs parallel to my joists. Q...

Creaking floors in new build - inevitable?

shocking story. At the very least, the sub floor should be securely screwed/nailed/glued down to the joists. Is your sub floor, floorboards or plywood sheets? To begin with, ask what the sub floor is and ask how it has been attached to the joists.

47mm timber in 50mm mini joist hanger ?

Is it ok to use 47mm wide timber in 50mm wide mini joist hangers ? It's only 3 milimetres difference. Also the stores / web sites I visit all seem to stock 50mm metalwork and 47mm timber ? Is it ok ?
