A switched fcu with an integrated timer ?

I've got a 24 hour timer - the kind that you stick steel pins into - which is fed from a switched fcu unit. The arrangement works but looks a mess and I've got concerns about the safety and/or efficiency of this arrangement. Does anyone know if there are 'special' fcu sockets available...

SDS drill + adaptor to use normal drill bits ?

I've got a Bosch SDS hammer/chisel drill which only takes special SDS shaped drill bits. I want to use all my 'normal' drill bits with this drill i.e. hexagonal shaft. How do I adapt my SDS drill to accept normal drill bits ? Please can you advise me what to buy ?

Two hundred pounds for the labour sounds like a good deal to me. Remember electricians have got to make a living after all.

New outdoor garage door frame : creosote ban

New untreated timber has been used to contruct a door frame to support an up and over garage door. This wood is exposed to the elements and has already been rained on a few times. As creosote is now banned, how should I go about painting this timber frame to protect it from the weather ...

    Socket Heights and Switches

If you are breaking into an existing ring main, why not make the six new sockets part of the ring main i.e. extend the ring main by another six sockets, looping the cable from one to the other. In terms of socket heights, you say you want these to be at floor level. You might consider...

    Kalirel electric radiators

I'm looking for an alternative to mucky central heating ( no boilers, flues or gas plumbing. These are fixed to the wall, designed to be run off a 13 amp fcu, and draw around 2 kilowatts current each. They are not storage heaters but can be indivually programmed to come on or off at...

    Hob/Oven Installation

I might have misunderstood but wouldn't that mean hanging both the cooker and hob off the 13 amp fuse in the cooker fcu ? If so, you might get away with using the oven and possibly two hob rings but then the third hob ring would make the fuse blow. Instead how about separating the cooker...

    Pump Shower

Some beefy power showers draw around 40 amps, depending on the pump chosen. I'm not qualified to give an opinion but here is my view as an amateur .... spurring off the light socket sounds like a problem waiting to happen. Your pump may only draw 3 amps now but the next owner, in ten...

    Plywood Questions

Thanks all for your guidance. The interlocking ply sounds promising. I'm not aiming to eliminate the bass noise. If I can minimise it that may be sufficient. In fact I moved out of the noisy flat in 2000 and have been letting it ever since. The noise reduction I have in mind is for my...

    Plywood Questions

I'm trying to achieve acoustic insulation. Quite a large area is involved at roughly 30 square metres, covering the bedroom and lounge. My neighbour below has loud musical tastes. The bass is the problem. At its worst it feels like 100 decibels but I am going to buy a sound meter to...

    Plywood Questions

With my floor joists exposed I've realised that I can't just lay fermacell flooring straight down onto the joists. A 'sub floor' is required first. From reading the wiki and other peoples posts here it is clear that MDF or chipboard won't do. My alternatives seem to be replacement...

Care home for cupped floorboards ?

All my floorboards are cupped and the majority of them squeek too. I've decided to take up all the floorboards and replace them with fermacell. To be environmentally friendly, is there a home for ancient cupped floorboards ? Or should I take them down to the dump ?

New power saw trips garage mcb - what options do I have?

Crabtree Switched FCU has no socket outlet ?

I bought some switched FCU's expecting to find a knockout for cord outlet. I was wrong. The fitting has a shiny chrome frontplate but there is nowhere for the flex to emerge. The fitting has a backplate which *does* have a socket outlet. Is it acceptable practice to drill a 10mm hole into...

New power saw trips garage mcb - what options do I have?

To measure the start up current accurately, perhaps you can use a multimeter or maybe buy a special plug that gives digital reading of watts drawn or current drawn by your saw ?

    13 Amp plug fuse

The 13 Amp plug fuse seems an odd standard to me. Apart from cooker, hob and shower which have their own circuits and are not plugged in anyway, I have no devices or appliances in my home that will draw 13 Amps. Even if I did have a 3 kilowatt fire, 13 Amps seems a poor choice for the...

    Standby Plug for TV ?

Not sure if I should I post this topic under "appliances" instead .... I want to buy a stand by plug to save electricity. When an appliance such as a TV is put into standby using the remote, the standby plug detects the reduction in current drawn by the appliance, waits a minute or so, then...
