Joists on wall plate - Two different heights

Thanks, yeah if I can use a packer inbetween each joist that will be easiest. Opening out a kitchen and the existing wall the new larger joists will sit on is about 30mm too low, roof space above and yeah there will be a gap i'll have to conceal, will come up with something! Just out of...

Joists on wall plate - Two different heights

Sorry to reignite this but based on previous comment around notching wanted to run a solution passed people. So notch the existing joists, believe I can take 12.5% off the bearing end, this will enable me to get a wall plate in and then rest new joists on that with no notches as they need to sit...

Joists on wall plate - Two different heights

Joist end on right is existing (ignore fact it looks like its floating!) Joist on left is new coming in from other direction but needs raised to the level shown by shims etc. I can't mess about with existing joist so can I for example run a wall plate between each existing joist gap to give me...

Joists on wall plate - Two different heights

Sorry, should have been clearer there that I need the new joists to be sitting 30mm higher than the existing wall the other joists are resting on. So when I sit the joist on the wall as is it's 30mm too low.

Joists on wall plate - Two different heights

Hi, Looking for some advice. I'm running some joists across a room to rest on an existing wall that has joists already in place. When I level the new joists they're sitting 30mm higher than the existing joists. Can I run blocking inbetween the existing joists to give me a 30mm bump up or how...

Anyone any advice on this? Have searched the net on this and can't find anything on stepping down a floor and the edge detail, thanks

    Extending/Raising Floor Approach

Hi All, Looking for some advice. Opening out kitchen and as part of that bringing floor up to same level, only about 5sqm and for majority of that bringing 125mm up to match rest of kitchen. At the moment I can see under existing kitchen floor and no idea if there is any insulation under there...

    Mini Wall Plate Setup

Just about to put up my new joists - any advice on whether to just go with seating them on the existing batten or do something different?

    Mini Wall Plate Setup

Me neither. Guess I have two choices, just sit the new joist on it and hope it never rots away or cut out sections where the pockets are and replace with maybe steel packers - any thoughts on what would be best approach?

    Mini Wall Plate Setup

Hi All, Replacing some ceiling joists that are pocketed into wall. Removed the old ones and been confronted with the setup in attached pics which I wasn't really expecting. The old joists were resting on a small bit of timber (50x20mm) and 50mm mortar bed behind this - so half timber batten and...

    Wall Tied In Halfway Down

Just starting bit of work to open out a kitchen. Removing a wall that seemed butted up to the original back wall of the house. About halfway down or just over it starts to tie into the back wall. Any ideas what's going on here? The wall sits out 440mm from the wall, 300 wide (cavity). Don't know...

Remove Section of Wall - Cut or Drill

Missed the obvious there then will get an extra long drill bit to reach across the cavity

Remove Section of Wall - Cut or Drill

Thanks, will take this approach. I also have to take part of a wall away below a window for a door. One side of the wall meets another on the inside so can't get a cutter or drill in straight from the front or top, assume you just have to go in at an angle and do best you can to make not a...

Remove Section of Wall - Cut or Drill

Hi All, Looking some advice for easy removal of part of a wall inside kitchen. It's painted brick so can see mortar lines, and point at which I'm removing is end of brick mortar line, half brick and so on all the way down. So do I hire or buy (for future use as well) a disc cutter and slice...

    Enlarging Pockets for Ceiling Joists

Hi All, I'm planning on opening out my kitchen and existing joists aren't the correct size for the wider span (going from 145 to 195). Pic attached of existing pocketed joist - assume there's no issue breaking out existing joist and mortar and slotting new joist in? Looks like I have a good blob...

    Ceiling above the Ceiling

Just for context is a pic of the top of the wall which is current ceiling height and joists/binders about 300mm above that

    Ceiling above the Ceiling

Hi All, I have a kitchen that I'm looking to open up into a side entry to make it bit more open plan. The two are seperated by a wall that supports the ceiling and nothing else. The ceiling is quite low at just less than 2.3m and there are two steps down in the side entry of about 120mm and...

    Coax through Soffit

Thanks, think that's the only option. Not sure why I was surprised the brickwork goes up that high and tight to the roof but there you go, hoping when I get to the new roof section it's a bit more straightforward!

    Coax through Soffit

Thanks. Think issue with feeding anything up is entry to the attic is blocked, looks like by big blob of mortar between top brick and underside of roof. Not sure if this is an old house thing to do, back of house is relatively new so will be interested to see if they blocked up that gap too...
