    micro bore in wall

Plastic will do. Its cheaper and will bend. If its central heating, why not just use plastic pipe.

    Remove a leaking radiator

Turn off the boiler, turn off all the power to the CH timer, isolate the water supply to the header tank (by tieing up the ball valve for example) and DRAIN DOWN. Its not that big a deal. When you refill remember to bleed the pump, the radiators, the hot water cylinder and (on some systems)...

    Just so many boilers....

You need to decide if you want to have a storage cylinder for your hot water. The special "mains pressure" (unvented) storage cylinders cost about £1500 and obviously take up a lot of space. If you don't want a storage cylinder, the more powerful combi boilers take mains cold water in, heat...

    air in system grrrrrr

TRV wide open when filling and balancing, set to whatever you like thereafter. Lockshield valves, set to balance the system. Do a search on balancing radiators.

    routing new pipes

The drainage pipe is the problem! whats under the bathroom ? you could drop the waste pipe down bellow the joists and run them hanging from the ceiling below if it's a garage / storage area. you could run the pipe out through an outside wall and to another stack, or the same stack if you...

    bath earthing help

the principle of earthing things in a bathroom is called supplementary equi-potential bonding. The idea is simply that if everything is electrically linked then should one metal part become live, then all the metal parts in the room will be at the same potential. Hence a person will not...

Thorn Apollo, pilot flame extinguished by strong winds

thorough service / complete overhaul over past 4 weeks, just about the only original parts are the case and the heat exchanger. The new gas valve gives a much better pilot flame, it appears latge in comparison to pilot flames on other appliances i've come across, it is set to max, its is now...

    CH Timed vs Constant

I think the answer depends on the type of wall construction you have. 9 inch Solid brick walls are better insulators if kept dry. If they are allowed to fall below the dew point they get damp and become less insulating. If you're in the house every day I would leave the heating on constantly...

Advice on draining the boiler/CH system

check for isolation valves on the boiler flow and return pipes and the cold water supply to the boiler. If you have them, it may not be necessary to drain the entire heating system to service the diverter valve.

    Central heating problem

can you see a pressure guage ? what number does the needle point to. does the heating work fine once the boiler has ignited.

    Solder Ring- - First timer

move the blowtorch along the lowest point of the fitting, heat rises. keep the blowtorch moving, heating the whole fitting then when hot briefly concentrate on each ring, keeping the flame moving a little, until u see a thin ring of solder appear at the joint. you can add solder from a roll...

Thorn Apollo, pilot flame extinguished by strong winds

Thorn apollo for contentional vented CH and HW cylinder, new gas valve, new thermocouple (yes the correct part not a universal). Not overheating, high and low stats working fine, pilot flame blows out in high wind conditions (yes even with overheat stat temporarily bridged). Horizontal...

Central Heating - how to find the blockage?

if pipework is copper might be able to feel for a blockage by feeling for a length of cold pipe while system is running. Could possibly confirm sludge blockage using a magnet.

I've got some chaulking tools I bought off some old plumber guy but I've never used them, are you supposed to pack the lead in solid state or melt and pour in?

    Replacing radiator with after tiling.

also while loosening union nuts, inadvertently revolve rad valve, buckle copper micro-bore pipe and entire system drains onto bathroom floor while you scrabble into loft to tie up the ball valve in the expansion tank. Not sure what wer're talking about? get a plumber in!

    Balancing a CH system

if the lockshield vavles don't function you can't balance the system. The flow temerature depends on the type of boiler and wether or not the thermostat is adjustable. Some old boilers have fully adjustable with a knob or a high/low switch. The flow temp should be set on the boiler to...
