But that's not efficiency. You can only measure efficiency against set parameters. The starting temperature has no effect on the efficiency of a boiler. It just takes more energy to increase 1l of water by 20oC than it does to raise the same 1l of water 10oC. simples Get It ?

That's right, but you may or may not need the bypass. Check to see if the boiler already contains one, a quick call to the manufacturers will confirm.

You said exactly that ! The fact that the boiler uses more energy to heat the water due to the greater differential in water temps, that does not make it less efficient. Infact with a modern condensing boiler, it should be slightly more efficient in winter as the temp differential is greater...
