I know you were, the main reason it's annoyed us is because the builders said that they would be primed and have certain plates and holes predrilled but they've came as stock steels but we've paid the same price. They take lots of photos of their work for advertising so we thought that seeing...

Thanks Woody, I've included a photo to show what I saw. Hopefully it clears it up. I believe that the builders are planning to install the joists and floor immediately after the steels are in place so that they can start the first floor brickwork. I noticed that the masonry hangers say to...

It's more the point that both the structural calcs and building control have requested two coats of red oxide primer on all steelwork, but thanks for your input.

Just had a look at these woody, they don't seem to have any face fix holes for the timber between the web of the steel. The only holes are on the top where they apparently bolt into the steel beam. Would these require drilled holes to secure into the steel? Or could a traditional jiffy hanger...

Thanks again your advice has been invaluable. Just got back to find the steels have been dropped off and are in the garage. The builders sorted them out as they had a mate at the supplier..... There's no primer whatsoever on the steelwork, eventually it will be enclosed with plasterboard and...

Thanks again woody, sounds like a good plan. I think the channel of the steel is 63mm so a length of 7" X 2" at 47mm with some 18mm cladding screwed to the back would get us somewhere near to ideal. And speedy hanger twist nailed on and over. Just to clarify, would the timber plate atop the...

Morning all, can anyone shed some light on my previous post? Getting the steels delivered today. Thanks

    upcoming extension advice

We managed a dry day and got the start of the piers built up in 7n blocks, toothing in as they went up. We plan to have the joists within the steelwork on a wall plate with joist hangers similar to https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/joists-into-rsj-web-or-bolt-on-wooden-bearer.487660/ As the...

Thanks again, hopefully the weather will ease off and we can get on with things. The footings seem to fill up very fast when it starts raining, think it's something to do with the tarp roof being draped down that side of the garage.

Thanks woody, same scenario as always. I can't get hold of the structural engineer despite emailing him yesterday and leaving him voicemails on his phone. Another question, as the footings are filling up with water when we have rain, if we get a dry day and they are a little damp could the...

Evening all, builders have started work and the front of the garage and concrete at the base of the piers has been removed. However, they're now full of water due to the endless rain we've had over the last two days. Seems to be ground water that's coming through from the outside single skin...

Gone for Class A solids in the end. No response from structural engineer despite phone calls. Grr. Thanks everyone.

If they're class B perf I have an abundance left over from the last build! I was struggling to see how a 7N block is the same as a 50N - 70N engineering brick. The steel at the base of everything is supporting 3 walls, the first floor and the new roof. Think I might go solid class A just as a...

Thanks again, just checking the calcs. They say that the beams are to be supported be 3 courses of engineering brickwork. What class would these be? A or B? And solid or perforated? I've emailed the structural engineer and no reply but have asked the builders and they've said that one 7N...

    upcoming extension advice

Hello again, got builders starting on Monday. They've asked for a final version of the plans so I'm just updating them now. Just a few questions, are the first floor joists better to be fixed at the UB side by: Notching into recess within the steel and noggins as infill Wall plate bolted...

Thanks for the replies. The structural engineer hasn't been brilliant with our enquiries so far. The notes on the floor joists only say 195 X 47 c24 grade timbers bolted with M10 bolts @ 600 centres. I was unsure if this meant the spacing between the joists or the distance of the bolts...

    upcoming extension advice

Just to update and hopefully get some more advice. The structural engineer has replied and said that the piers are to be built (bonded) into the original brickwork using 7N blocks (assuming toothing in every 3 courses?) So from the front it will be a full block and two half blocks bonded into...

Thanks again woody. We've just sent an email over to the engineer so hopefully we'll get the details we need in a few days. Agree, that makes alot of sense now I think about the construction of a wall starter as they are designed to slide. Sounds like bonding in would be the best option and...

Thanks again woody, What would be the best method of securing the new blockwork onto the old brickwork for the piers? Or could we instead bolt 100mm box section stood upright or similar to the piers and support off that? I've just looked through the calcs again, the only thing mentioning...
