    Making your own mantlepiece

Green timber is very likely to split, twist and generally change drastically in appearence when used in this type of application. The moisture content of green timber can be upwards of 100% and the equilibrium moisture content of your front room near your fire is likelty to be in the high single...

    timber

As said above you have very little chance of gaining enough of a purchasing advantage yourself unless you have huge storage facilities, a good relationship with an Agent/Mill, a huge cash balance and a willingness to take a risk. One of the main factors to take into consideration is the part...

Fitting safety gate to nice oak staircase

No idea about design, just be aware that if you do use any metalic fixings directly in contact with the oak make sure they are non-ferous. Ferous metals can react with oak causing discoloration or even decay - it is reccomended to always use stainless steel or brass I think it is from memory to...

    sealing treated timber

Are you seriously suggesting that you know more than TRADA (Timber Research & Development Association), Osmose & Arch Timber Treatments (2 of Europe's largest manufacturers of timber treatment chemicals) and numerous merchants, importers and distributors? If you are then fair enough, but...

    sealing treated timber

So you didn't bother to read the links posted above then? You know, the links to the manufacturers of the treatment chemicals, which both clearly state that sealing of the ends or any cut pieces is required for any guarantee to stand? As I said, I don't want to get into an argument. No sweat...

    sealing treated timber

See my previous post for the science, and an explanation of why you may have seen any treated softwood without decay. If you still disagree with me then I would suggest reading the following websites (2 of the largest European providers of timber treatment) for confirmation of the reccomended...

    fitting a door frame

Not a joiner, but the biggest single peice of advise I would offer is to make sure that the plasterboard is dried thoroughly before putting wood or MDF anywhere near it - then leave it a bit longer just to make sure. I have inspected a few claims with ill fitting doors and they are amost solely...

    sealing treated timber

No worries, been reading through this forum the last few days and there is a fair bit of assumption that could lead to problems for others. Thought I would do my bit and try and help out and hopefully leave people less open to chance - and the material failing gving further problems down the...

    sealing treated timber

Not entirely sure I understand your point, but basically the treatment process 'packs out' the voids in the structure of the wood and forms a physical barrier stopping any other foreign bodies permiating it. The point here is that the vacume process can only suck out air where there is a void in...

    sealing treated timber

I drove my car for 15 years without putting any oil in, it still got me to work and back every day - doesn't make me right though.

    sealing treated timber

Don't want to get into an argument here boys & girls, me being a new member and all, but it is an incorrect assumption that pressure treatment protects the whole length of timber. Even in a vacume, or double vacume (vac-vac process) you are not guaranteed to permiate 100% of the wood - you...

    sealing treated timber

Pressure treatment is unlikely to go all the way through the timber, so as a minimum you need to be treating any cut lengths on the end grain - to play it safe for the sake of a few quid I would advise sealing the end grain regardless as its by far the most vulnerable part.

    Computer desk

You sure you got veneer on your desk? More likely MFC I reckon, if so (even if it is veneered chipboard) the cost and trouble to strip it down compared to the cost of replacing what could be a relatively cheap peice of furniture may make it unviable. If you do want to keep the peice the...

Where to get kitchen doors spray painted lacquered

Sounds like an expensive method to me. If all you want is the edge effect of birch plywood see if your joiner/merchant can edge you some plain colour MF MDF panels with a birch effect edge banding? If you need suggestions for edging products that may be suitable please let me know.

    Treating Plywood

WBP only refers to the glueline of the plywood, the plywood itself requires treating/seling on all 4 edges and both faces if being used in external applications where exposed to potential wetting up. If you need to TRADA data sheet let me know and I will get you a copy.
