    To even it out, you can fill those dips with a mix of sand and topsoil. The grass will grow through that.

    I also used to have privet hedges and finally decided to get rid cus they were quite hard work. As you don't have this option, have you considered cutting into the hedge quite hard on your side, to tidy it up somewhat... bearing in mind that privet will tolerate such cutting and grow back...

    i used a piece of waste water pipe in concrete what is the outside diameter of your pole? (heh heh) A piece of plastic pipe that your sink drains through will probably accomodate it. Just sink the plastic (above a layer of gravel) in some concrete and it wont even fill up with water.

    Sharp sand! yes dry. just wet enough to make sand castles with but no wetter you should be able to form sausage shapes in your hand but you dont want it any wetter than that

    Sorry bout this but thats not the right definition of crowning. That picture shows cupping, which is bowing across the grain. Crowning is bowing ALONG the grain. Framers will normally have one stud 'crown up' and the next 'crown down' along a run so that they don't bend the wall out in one...
