I've taken pictures along the way and you are right, it's amazing looking back and actually seeing how much work you've actually done.

    Foundation for a brick shed

Foundations all done, thanks for everyones advice. Just digging out the center ready for the hardcore to go in. I'll have some heavy weight in the shed like my weight bench and a couple of arcade machines. I have two questions if someone could answer them for me. 1, Am I right in thinking...

    Foundation for a brick shed

Right, the trenches are all dug down to 500mm and I'm ready to mix my own concrete for the foundations but I'm confused on what ratio to use for the mix. Is it 1:2:4 or 1:3:6 or am I completely wrong? What would be the best mix ratio to use so I can order my stuff :D

    Foundation for a brick shed

Yes, it is a rule for my build. To build the brick shed without building regulations approval, the "floor area" has to be no larger than 30m2. Quote from planning portal "If the floor area of the building is between 15 square metres and 30 square metres, you will not normally be required...

    Foundation for a brick shed

How do I work out my total floor space? I've got a cavity wall, is it from the inside of the outside brick or the inside of the inside block? Can't go above 30m2 so I need to know for sure :D

    Foundation for a brick shed

pinenot, you are right my friend 8) I have dug down next to the old wall that I will be building next to and the bottom of the foundation is only 370mm deep and only consists of bricks laid on their sides (100mm) on which the wall is sat on. There is only a 15mm gap either side between the...

I've got to say, pinenot has helped me out considerably preparing for my brick shed build. I cae looking at his profile to see if I could PM him to thank him personally but since I can't seem to be able to do that, I'll leave a cmment here. Cheers Bud :-)

    Foundation for a brick shed

Am I right in thinking I wouldn't need planning permission or building regs for what I intend to build? I've checked the planning portal and i'm pretty confident I can with the rules for upto a 30m2 shed. I'm poised ready to dig, I'm thinking of going to the council to confirm but I'm sure...

    Foundation for a brick shed

The neighbors garden is about 700mm lower than mine so from my side, the foundations for it will be very deep but from her side, I presume it's not very deep at all. Having a chat with my other neighbour and he said he didn't dig very deep at all but can't remember the depth he went to. I...

    Foundation for a brick shed

So you're saying that if I take my foundations depth to 1 meter, I should be good to go? There is so much contradicting information on clay soils on the internet. Some say it's the best ground to build on, some say it's the worst. My neighbour has a normal single block shed built on very shallow...

    Foundation for a brick shed

Not quite sure what you mean. Are you saying to dig down to the side of the walls foundations and put mine alongside or something different. You're the professional and I'm the novice so I can't quite grasp what you mean by that, I feel silly now

    Foundation for a brick shed

OK, lovely. So much bad reading about clay that foundations have to be quite deep but I guess my build isn't a house so it's not as bad. I'm starting to order the stuff now. Two sides of the foundation though will be against a brick wall which is my neighbours wall. Their garden is lower...

    Foundation for a brick shed

Can you please confirm to me that digging to the undisturbed clay line means that I only have to dig to where the clay starts which is 420mm or is it wise to dig into it a little? Just want to be sure, I'm quite looking forward to this and would like to get it right 8)

You use two pieces of wood. Use one thin piece which would be the same height as the mesh and use a second piece to slide on top of the mesh above the first piece of wood leaving the mesh protruding between the wood.

Lovely, thank you. I can do it myself then if that is the case. When I do it in sections, I'm presuming that there will be small gaps where I join them up. Do I just skim over them with concrete to make them watertight?

    Foundation for a brick shed

I guess you are right, thank you. I've been thinking about these foundations for ages and I guess I've just made things too complicated going over different information. It would be perfect if I could do it in two stages. Lovely, that makes my job so much easier as I would prefer to do it...

    Foundation for a brick shed

I presumed that it would be best laid in one go since it's on clay. Most information on the net shows clay is the hardest to build on due to it moving but others say it's the best as it's good ground. So you're saying, If I presumably use rebar mesh, I can lay the foundations in two parts...

    Foundation for a brick shed

Thank you pinenot. May I just confirm by digging to undisturbed clay, that you mean to where the clay starts at around 450mm? Is that my depth or is it preferable to dig into the clay slightly? Just making sure I'm clear on the depth. I haven't got any rebar lying around but if it's going to...
