    Scrap cable question

reminds me of when loadsa ****** broke into the 400kV substation and the 132kV alongside it and took out all the copper earthing straps. they never seem to get hurt one bit  Took us weeks to put it all back, fitting temp earths was fun tho, one false move and half of dorset would trip...

    Numpties! Training the trainer.

When I started my apprenticeship, and was doing my basic skills training they were showing us the correct way to strip T&E - very neatly with a knife down the centre.... straight after the lecturer said 'now this is the electricity board way of doing it' - and used the cheese slice method...

    Domestic Wind Turbine Viability

grid connect invertors are often called just that. Synchronic inverters means you can syncronise an inverter directly to the mains on your side of the electricity meter. if you have the normal wheel type of meter then it will have no problem whatsoever, as what will happen is when you produce...

    Condensation in outside 230v lights

Put some silicone grease on the rubber, that will sort it.

Economy 7 - storage heaters come on in the afternoon????????

Dodgy timeclock on your E7 meter, just needs re-setting. Give the electricity board a shout they will sort it. They will not charge at all. If you have a single electricity meter with 2 dials then your whole house has cheap electricity on the E7 rate and not just the heaters - make the most...

    Domestic Wind Turbine Viability

i always wondered how noisy these small <500 watt wind turbines actually are... its the only thing stopping me going ahead with my next project :)

    Domestic Wind Turbine Viability

The best thing with a wind turbine is to store the power in large batteries, either with a 24 or 48 volt system. Then use the power from the batteries through a mains inverter but make sure its a true sine wave inverter. This will allow you to run independantly from the grid. You can get grid...

We will never be without power

Na pee stays in the soil, gives a very low resistance and reacts very well to AC current. Spot on aid in reducing the resistance of earth rods! Im not planning on leaving the property, but if i do its all coming out and back to normal. Our house is right at the end of the street, and with...

    Silly pat test requests... lol

Though a double socket (wait for it...) is often classed as a 'double plate' - it is dangerous to rate a double socket less than 26 amps. What happens if some numpty plugs a fan heater and kettle into the same double socket, cos the mcb wont trip! trust, its 13 amps per outlet. if it wasnt...

    Debt collecting

When i went self employed doing electrical work after i left the electricity board, I was always on my guard for people who didnt want to pay. I always took a deposit up-front and then the rest of the payment when the job was done. hardly a problem, word of bouth got me decent work, all was...

    Silly pat test requests... lol

Double sockets are rated at 13 amp each outlet. They have to in order to get the BS rating. I have had this argument with a few sparkies but trust me, i know. Every double socket you see will handle 13 amps on each outlet.

We will never be without power

Im back - and yeah there is a rod i put in which i connect the genny to. Had to use an old electricity board trick to get the rod reading right down but 0.3 ohms is good :) - yep u guessed it, take a leak on the ground as you bang the rod in! As for having an isolator switch before the c/o...

We will never be without power

its old-school crabtree installed by the council years ago in our council house days, which i havent gotten round to changing. spose thats the next thing but all is good so far. you probs already know this but for the benefit of those that dont, make sure the neutral and earth are commoned...

    fuse spare

Yeah always a common one that is, it will trip the rcd. You can test between live and neutral as normal to check your voltage. If you want to confirm correct polarity you can check neutral to earth and this should be as close to 0 volts as poss. If theres a just a few volts on the neutral it...

We will never be without power

My latest lil project, i own a few 6 to 8kVA diesel generators for small outdoor events, and thought i'd make a little contingency plan incase our power goes out, flick a switch and were back on! And yep the gennys are neutral earthed ;) even better, they run on cooking oil. if it werent...

    Silly pat test requests... lol

yep I often drag myself out to do a spot of pat testing here and there, mainly on stage/sound/lighting equipment. Whilst going through some kit for someone, they came upto me asking to pat test this widowmaker for them, FYI a widowmaker is two 13 amp plugs, with leads paralleled into a single...

    age,benefit or not

its never been a prob for me. im just speaking from experience, thats all. I spose its who you know at the end of the day, i mean do a decent job for some1 on an industrial estate and u soon get work from their fellow businesses. NIC registration means naff all. I have seen horrendous...

    age,benefit or not

Part P is only necessary if you want to work in houses (or anywhere classed as a 'dwelling') - my advice to anyone looking to do electrical work is to offer services to commercial properties, factories, that sort of thing. 1) theres more money in it 2) youre not having to feel like youre...
