    Beginners woodworking

Thanks for the reply. I really do want to get into this a little bit more. Especially as we're only really just getting started on the house and there will be plenty of opportunities for projects etc. My main problem I have is that I tend to rush things. This leads to mistakes and errors...

Using gripit fixings on a double plasterboarded wall

I went for the Rigifix in the end. I reckon I could have hung from the fixing it was that strong. Needless to say the shelves are up and looking great. Thanks for the help.

Using gripit fixings on a double plasterboarded wall

Thanks. These look good. They do them in M8 size which I think would be better for what I'm trying to achieve.

Using gripit fixings on a double plasterboarded wall

Of course I can. Didn't think of that. Thanks again. Here is a pic of the first one in all it's glory.

Using gripit fixings on a double plasterboarded wall

Thank you for this. I'll go for something a little longer. The shelves are indeed going onto an external wall. I have two concerns: 1) I hit mortar and don't get a good fixing 2) The head of the torx screw (7.5mm) is smaller than the hole I've already created in the wood to house the bolt I...

Using gripit fixings on a double plasterboarded wall

Found the slightly longer ones. Thank you for the suggestion. I’ll post a pic of the shelf. Perhaps you guys could confirm these fixing would be ok. They’d pass straight through the wood, the plasterboard and then into the wall.

Using gripit fixings on a double plasterboarded wall

Thanks for the replies. I was unable to find any studs so had to make do with the plasterboard. The shelves are only 750mm wide and won’t be having anything heavy on them. Perhaps a candle.... The masonry fixing above would do the trick but would need to be longer. Perhaps 80mm?

Using gripit fixings on a double plasterboarded wall

Hi all, I am hanging two floating shelves (some 2x6”) on a bathroom wall. I drilled some holes into the side of the shelf and then ripped 2” off of the width giving me two parts. Into the smaller part I installed some 1/2” dowels and made sure everything fit nicely. The smaller piece is...

Point taken re the UK magazines. I read an article the other day and perhaps formed judgment before reading any more. I'll check out the ones above.

Thank you both. I may take out a yearly subscription on Fine Woodworking as there seems to be a slight lack of magazines available here in the UK which is disappointing. Thanks again.

    Beginners woodworking

Hi, I'm slowly getting into a little bit of woodworking and have completed a couple of projects at home (some ladder shelves and some floating shelves). I've mainly taken guidance from Youtube and here. I have built up a small array of tools and now I'd quite like to start using them...

    Floating Shelves - Best Fixings

This is how our shelves were made. They look fine and are nice and strong and just need painting. Here are some pics.

Most common cause of floods or leaks in houses .....

Can completely relate to this after having to top up my boiler twice a day due to a leaky/burst flexible connector. All sorted now.

Another "my boiler is losing pressure" post

I am thankful this wasn't the case and the leak was downstairs. The water was able to drain off under the house but over time I guess the damage could have been a lot worse. We have a towel rail in the downstairs toilet which I've switched off (we no longer use the room). Guess what it's...

Another "my boiler is losing pressure" post

Another update: Plumber/builder came round and took up the boards near the rad. Both flow and return had flexible metal pipe installed under them and they'd both burst. Presumably because of the recent bout of cold weather (and the fact they shouldn't have been used in the first place). Two...

Agreed. He is I guess multi-skilled and has done plumbing work for us before.

Another "my boiler is losing pressure" post

I really don't mind paying someone qualified to do a job, I honestly don't. What I object to is being given a figure for work that I think (providing there are no other nightmares involved) will take no more than an hour. I can then refill the system and bleed the rads if necessary. The...

Another "my boiler is losing pressure" post

An update: Until today I have been filling and refilling the system just to get by. This has been happening pretty much twice a day. I have not tried to isolate the heating system from the boiler. Today there was a development. I came in from work and thought I'd give some Fernox leak sealer...

Another "my boiler is losing pressure" post

OK. So am I right in thinking that to isolate my heating I'd need to turn these two?
