I don't think the plate screw is screwing into the brown wire, there's no evidence that it is anyways. As for the earthing of the switch, if I connect all the earth wires to the switch that would then leave none attached to the back box. Is that right? I thought one had to go to the back box as...

Ahhh ok, is there a reason that there are two earth wires on the light itself? Also I presume in a terminal strip wires connected on opposite sides are essentially 'connected'? But wires either side of each other aren't?

And I presume the loose wire inside the metal casing stays loose and just earths the light fitting itself by touching the metal on the casing?

Can I just connect all the lives, neutral and earths into one side of the block and then connect the live neutral and earth into the opposite sides of the block? Or do I need to mirror the wiring as it stands now?

I got a one gang because I didn't think the other switch on the current one did anything. Is there any way of removing/disabling the wiring to the lighting sockets rather than keeping them? Save me also faffing with terminal strips behind the blank plates.
