Thank you - what grade would you recommend I sand with?

Should I use a stripper on the varnish first and then sand lightly? I can see that if I try and sand to get all the varnish off, I'll be more likely to go through the whole veneer. If so, any recommendations on stripper that is strong enough to get off the varnish but gentle enough on the veneer?

OK so the meths didn't do anything at all. Does that mean it's definitely varnish and that sanding is my only option? Any alternatives help with not ruining the whole thing pretty please?

Will pick some up tomorrow. If I rub the meths on and it gums up as you say, do I continue with it to remove it or is this just the "testing" stage... Any tips on this without making too much mess?

That's what I've always liked about the Cuprinol (Cuprinol Ultimate to be more specific), the water repellence is so good - water beads on it like a freshly polished and waxed car.

But what about water getting in the cracks - not to mention also food and drink...? I've already bought the Cuprinol as I found it to be very good stuff on other garden furniture enriching dried out wood and with good waterproofing characteristics. Do you have a particular reason to recommend...

Final update - patio laid, pergola built, BBQ area done (and used!) table made and turf down. All in all I'm pretty chuffed with myself as a complete amateur!

Would I be better clamping something else? Or is there a better way other than just being really careful as Ivor suggested?
