    Hinge suggestions please

Hi Blup I truly appreciate your input re social services, but he's just a bit of an odd ball and puts his plate on something else on top of the laptray. If it was all on a table at eating height then he'd be so much happier. Also having something done for him by family would mean way more to...

    Hinge suggestions please

Hello all My aging father has a nice cherry wood coffee table 4' x 2' and about 18" high. He eats all of his meals on his lap sat on the sofa in front of it, and regularly spills the plate all over himself despite having a lap tray. He has asked me to make him a new table that's higher so he...

Best & Recommended Finishes/Varnish/Stain for Tables (indoors and out) please

Hello all I hope it's ok to ask this here... I made a table for our patio last year, with the top made of reclaimed scaffold boards, sanded cleaned up, then joined carefully with biscuit joints and glued up, then treated all over. I really enjoyed creating something for myself and more to the...

    Veneer restoration

Thank you - what grade would you recommend I sand with?

    Veneer restoration

Should I use a stripper on the varnish first and then sand lightly? I can see that if I try and sand to get all the varnish off, I'll be more likely to go through the whole veneer. If so, any recommendations on stripper that is strong enough to get off the varnish but gentle enough on the veneer?

    Veneer restoration

OK so the meths didn't do anything at all. Does that mean it's definitely varnish and that sanding is my only option? Any alternatives help with not ruining the whole thing pretty please?

    Veneer restoration

Will pick some up tomorrow. If I rub the meths on and it gums up as you say, do I continue with it to remove it or is this just the "testing" stage... Any tips on this without making too much mess?

    Veneer restoration

Hello all We have been given an old vanity unit but the varnish is in a pretty poor state. I want to try and give it a new lease of life... I have previously sanded and applied danish oil to really good effect on a solid wood piece of furniture but tried the same with a veneered item and the...

    Driveway Damage caused by neighbour

Hi all Posting here as I can't see another appropriate one and this is marked as the "catch all" if it doesn't fit anywhere else... I live in an old (400+years) property in Kent and we have an old cobbled driveway. Not sure if it dates back the full way but it's certainly more than twice as...

Large v small router bits - help please!

Hi all I have an old router that has served me well for a few years with the odd job here and there, but it only came with a single straight “bit”. I’ve now got a set of various other bits but they are all of a much smaller fitting - I’m guessing 1/4” v the original 1/2”. There seem to be a...

DIY Patio Table build - joint correction

That's what I've always liked about the Cuprinol (Cuprinol Ultimate to be more specific), the water repellence is so good - water beads on it like a freshly polished and waxed car.

DIY Patio Table build - joint correction

But what about water getting in the cracks - not to mention also food and drink...? I've already bought the Cuprinol as I found it to be very good stuff on other garden furniture enriching dried out wood and with good waterproofing characteristics. Do you have a particular reason to recommend...

Help with patio made from reclaimed bricks

Final update - patio laid, pergola built, BBQ area done (and used!) table made and turf down. All in all I'm pretty chuffed with myself as a complete amateur!

Wrong mortar mix - schoolboy error

Would I be better clamping something else? Or is there a better way other than just being really careful as Ivor suggested?

DIY Patio Table build - joint correction

Hello all I've just completed the mammoth (to me) summer DIY task of brick patio, pergola and brick BBQ area and to finish it off as this wasn't enough work, I decided to also build the table for the patio. I've made it from reclaimed scaffold boards and general 4x2 and 4x3 for the legs...

Wrong mortar mix - schoolboy error

Thank you - sounds perfect. I think I'll go one step further and clamp some timber along the marked area to slow any sudden transgression of the grinder.
