Wrong mortar mix - schoolboy error

So I got this all sorted and the BBQ was successfully christened on Saturday evening. I would like to extend the height of the brickwork on either side of the BBQ, just by a couple of courses. However on one side I would need to brick straight onto the granite worktop. I'm assuming that the...

Split Pergola posts and Post protector wrap

I can’t do much about it now - the whole thing is built including all the top joists and its concreted in.

Split Pergola posts and Post protector wrap

This should be the right timber to use? Or have I done something wrong? I was thinking of filling the crack with clear silicone to stop it filling with rain water, or possibly a colour matched one as the clear one would go cloudy in time…?

Split Pergola posts and Post protector wrap

I’ve put up my pergola posts and down one side they are in what will be the lawn, set in concrete (postcrete specifically). I’ve bought some post protector wraps to go round the part of the post that will be in soil to protect from rot, but some of the posts have split since I set them, one...

Wrong mortar mix - schoolboy error

I'm not doing the whole lot - most of it is hidden. Just the end (front) of the wall which will be seen. The rest is mainly inside what will be storage etc - don't care too much about the colour scheme in there!

Wrong mortar mix - schoolboy error

I'm going to take the pointing out with an angle grinder. I may be the only person who would ever notice, but I'd notice every time I looked at it!!!

Wrong mortar mix - schoolboy error

You say "just rake out" - I think I'd have to drill it out - it's gone pretty hard! I'll see how determined I feel once I've done the rest and how noticeable the difference is...

Wrong mortar mix - schoolboy error

Thanks - would I be right in thinking with builders sand it'll be more yellow so need a greyish dye?

Wrong mortar mix - schoolboy error

Thank you both. Unworkable is about right! Is there anything that I can add to make the colour closer to what I have so far? Does mortar dye exist?

Pergola/shed (adequate stability of posts?) (Ed.)

Surprised you got no replies to this. I recently put my own pergola up 6m x 3m but without a roof. I went down 75cm for each of the 10 uprights so 5 inches doesn’t sound like a lot, especially with a roof on top to catch the wind…

Wrong mortar mix - schoolboy error

Oh dear oh dear oh dear. So I’m building a brick bbq at the end of a brick patio and wooden pergola that I’ve finished and have been “novice DIY’ing” all the way and researching heavily every step of the way. Except for the bricklaying for the BBQ. Didn’t think there could be much to it...

@chilluk that's a fair shout. @noseall could you expand on the airtightness being a blessing and a curse?

Brick BBQ with cupboards - DPM?

A tip please... When I get to the top of the brick supports for the granite worktop, should I put this directly onto the last course of bricks (that has been levelled) rather than using another layer of mortar? I'm just thinking the the sheer weight of the worktop (it will take three or four...

Brick BBQ with cupboards - DPM?

The BBQ will be on the left of a 3m span with the fridge on the far right. So it'll be (a) below the level of the BBQ, and also have three vertical courses of brick between, and a granite worksurface above. It'll be getting more heat from the sun than the BBQ. And as I said, I'll only have the...

Brick BBQ with cupboards - DPM?

Yes, that was the plan, brick built for cupboards to support the granite (which is insanely heavy!) and then put doors on the front. I’ll probably not do the stainless doors, simply because it would look so out of character (old rustic house and garden), but make up doorframes and doors from...

Brick BBQ with cupboards - DPM?

So what is the difference between a cupboard in a bbq area, and a box outside for cushions to keep them dry. Why don’t the cushions get wet based on what you’re saying?
